A shot over the Conwy Estuary at high tide taken from the RSPB reserve. In the foreground are beds of samphire bounded by a line of birds that are mostly curlew (around 50 in this shot out of over 200 on the estuary). In the background is Conwy Castle and Stephenson's iconic tubular rail bridge.

Iolo is 4 today, I just can't believe that he is 4 It's not been quite the birthday we'd planned as he had to go to the vets and have his impacted anal gland squeezed - ouch. Poor boy can't sit comfortably and is feeling a bit sorry for himself. We will celebrate at the weekend when he should be less tender!

"Daeth 15 ohonom ynghyd ar ôl y Nadolig sef John Arthur, Gwyn, Gwyn Chwilog, Anet, Iolo, Gerallt, Haf, John Parry, Carys, Dafydd Meurig, Geraint, Meira, Twm, Beti a Delyth. Roedd y tywydd yn sych wrth i ni gerdded o gwmpas Llyn Dinas. Aethom dros y gamfa ac i fyny at fwthyn Hafod Owen, a chawsom baned gerllaw. Yma y daeth y dringwr John Menlove Edwards i fyw tua 1941.

Roedd digon o fwd ar y llwybr wedyn cyn cyrraedd Lôn Blaen Nantmor. Gwelsom yr hen olwyn ddŵr ger Pont yr Injan. I fyny â ni ar hyd llwybr Watkin, heibio'r nant fyrlymus at Garreg Gladstone, a chael cinio yno. Er bod y gwynt wedi codi ymddangosodd yr haul wrth i ni gerdded i lawr y llwybr a gwelsom ddau alpaca yng nghae Hafod y Llan. Ymlaen â ni heibio Llyndy Isaf ac o gwmpas y llyn."

I visited here in Dec 2013 after hearing about the Calm Campaign.

The large lagoons here once contained a whitish slurry made up of water and pulverised fuel ash (PFA), the residue of the coal burnt in the power station. Now they are full of open water and reedbeds, and birds and other wildlife thrive there where industrial waste was once dumped.

I notice a mole hill just on the grassy verge there, it was a pale grey in colour, had no body as such, very powdery and light in weight. I presumed this was the remnants of that said PFA.

Recently I've found out that this coal power station is due to be closed down. There a few other power stations dotted around our coasts. One going...

1st August 2016 at Ham Marquee, Sidmouth.

Sidmouth Folk Week.

Country: Britain - Wales. Style: Welsh / InterCeltic Folk.

Lineup: Jamie Smith (v/piano accordion), Oliver Wilson-Dickson (fiddle), Ron Juppy (g), Matt Downer (b/bass g), Iolo Whelan (d).

This group started out in 1999 as Mabon playiing tunes of mainly Welsh music. The acoustic quartet included Jamie Smith and Iolo Whelan, plus the former's father and latter's brother. Then came Whelan's move to a drum kit, the adding of the bass, Smith taking up singing, a focus on Smith's compositions and the change of name. They call their music "InterCeltic" to acknowlege influnces from various countries, though they carry on doing some songs in Welsh as well as English.

In this photo: Smith plays a Pietro Mario Piano Accordion.

many thanks Lesley he looks great.

A friend on Face Book ask me "What do you think Nigel Pugh about this article?" *(1)

I responded

Many are talking a radical plan is needed * (2) , but yes he could be right.... I disagree on the renewables front, agree with futility of carbon off setting, disagree with nuclear. We really do need a war like mentality in relation to countering climate change. Yes world- wide we need to change our consumerist habit, addiction, obsession with monetary growth that has jeopardised or made our future uncertain. If ever the precautionary principle is coming into play it's now. Nothing focusses collective conscious to a collective goal better than disaster. Look how floods have forced the current government to concede to climate change science and put it back on to the agenda. The real worry is when the weather improves* (3), and we have three months of back to back sunshine, climate change talk all goes away - slips off the agenda. It's more than a shame that governments and the electorate will potentially put off really addressing climate change until the shit 'potentially' really hits the fan; on our doorstep! To me, it all looks like politics gambling with our futures. If you were the betting type, where would you put your money - climate change science or short term politics; further exploration of fossil fuels - shale gas, fracking the UK, or truly backing community renewable energy shares? By the way the only real energy choice that will actually bring your energy bills down and give others decent interest rates. Who is making the money out of fossil fuels, who is tying us into irreversible climate change 'potential' disaster, who doesn't stand to make all of the profit from community energy? Or am I just reading between too many lines?
