Biography

"In her voice sings the wind, sometimes a river laughs and even the whispers of the earth can be heard" -NicolĂĄs Buenaventura.

Graduated from the Berklee College of Music, Marta GĂłmez has developed an extensive music career which has placed her as one of the most interesting singer songwriters on the world music scene today.

Marta and her group perform a repertoire of original compositions based on a vast amount of rhythms from Latin America. On her songs, Marta mixes the joy of the Caribbean with the nostalgia of the Andes adding jazz and pop elements, taking the authenticity of South American indigenous folk music into a new realm.

With more than 80 composed songs, This young singer-songwriter not only traverses a whole range of Colombian cumbias and bambucos, Argentine zambas, chilean cuecas, Bolivian carnavalitos and Peruvian festejos but she also writes the kind of melodies and refrains that translates across any language barrier.

On her sixth production "El corazĂłn y el sombrero" (The heart and the hat) (2011 Aluna Records), she pays a tribute to Spanish poet Federico GarcĂa Lorca, adding Latin American folkloric rhythms to 12 of his poems. The album was recently nominated for the Latin Grammy as the Best Design.

Marta is nourished by the everyday stories, and from this nostalgia, songs emerge with a deep social and human content. In an interview on the National Public Radio, journalist Steve Inskeep said he admires Marta's capacity of "turning the bitter history of her native country into sweet music".

America Entretejida

“AmĂ©rica Entretejida” - Multimedia Cultural Documentary Series - is a call to build a cultural bridge to exchange, not only of ancestral techniques, patterns, and materials, but also ideas to preserve the legacy and traditions of our indigenous communities.

Kudos Baronesa #NY #UIO #MIA #GLPS @baronesaNY #Cristina Morrison @IdeaCatalyst1 @eelqhshow @KeylaMedinaRosa #HoracioGioffre @Caracol1260 #Jazz #Actress #Singer #Princesabaronesa

Actress, Singer Cristina Morrison releases her album Baronesa at Rockwood Music Hall in New York City, Tuesday September 29, 8:30 PM

"Part biographical, perhaps even part autobiographical and all adventure, Baronesa by the ineffable chanteuse Cristina Morrison is an amorous masterpiece.” Raul Gama, LATINJAZZNET

New York based actress, songwriter and singer, Cristina Morrison promises a repertoire of original and upbeat compositions effortlessly combining jazz elements with popular rhythms on Tuesday, September 29th, 8:30 p.m on the release of her new album Baronesa (Jazzheads Records) at Rockwood Music Hall (196 Allen Street, NYC).

Baronesa is Cristina Morrison (lyrics & vocals); Misha Piatigorsky (music & piano); Willard Dyson (drums); Danton Boller (bass); Tatum Greenblatt (trumpet); Dave Pietro (sax).

Affectionately known as the Baroness of Jazz, Cristina Morrison’s second album, appropriately called Baronesa, draws upon her life experiences – featuring songs in four different languages (English, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese) with a diverse mix of music styles – jazz, tango, cha cha, drum & bass, bolero and even spoken word. The songs blend her skills as an actress and a singer and tell stories about her life, her friends and the Galapagos Islands. Cristina is deeply committed to contributing to the environmental and social conscience of Galapagos children. She supports an educational arts program called Arteducarte in all the public schools of Isabela. A portion of the proceeds from her records sales helps sustain the program yearly.
