Trying a little IBM for a change. Not working works.

One of the most beautifully designed Starbucks Stores around the world is here. It opened in the Ibn Battuta Mall, the world’s largest themed shopping mall in Dubai, UAE.

The mall consists of six zones, and their designs are inspired by the countries visited by the great Moroccan explorer Ibn Battuta, which include Egypt, India, China, Andalusia and Tunisia in addition to Persia where Starbucks serves coffee under the magnificent dome.

I think the dome was partly inspired by "golf ball" typewriter heads.

IBM? An Intentional Butterfly Movement of course. Monarch butterfly at Wynnum Wetlands, Brisbane.

On reflection, it’s interesting to speculate on how fast this Butterfly was going, with the shutter speed being 1/320. Faster movement than you may think!

Located in Endicott, NY, the former research building of International Business Machines sits across from the dormant factory campus on North Street. This shot is from a recent project documenting the history of IBM in the Triple Cities, during the course of which I made multiple trips to the area with 4x5 & 35mm film.

On February 2, 2011 CSIS president and CEO Dr. John J. Hamre moderated a conversation with CEOs Michael Dell of Dell, Inc. and Samuel J. Palmisano of IBM. During this session, Dr. Hamre and his guests explored the challenges to U.S. IT competitiveness in the 21st century, from taxes and trade to education and immigration. To address the current fiscal deficit, Mr. Palmisano argued that the U.S. government can save money by consolidating its IT infrastructure. Mr. Dell said the same can be done for 1,000s of U.S. government supply chains. Both business leaders agreed that the competitive landscape is shifting as quickly as the middle class is rising in India and China. They argued that adopting newer technology and lowering corporate tax rates will help improve the competitiveness of U.S. businesses.
