Iowa's trout streams are spring fed and stay open year-round, as shown by Trout Run here even after a week where the nights were nearly -20 F (-29 C). Surprisingly, trout were rising to slurp small aquatic insects from the surface as those nymphs attempted to emerge into adult midges. Life goes on out in nature even during the dead of winter!
These American snout flies are always neat to see out in the woodlands where they live during the summer. Notice the long duck-like beak that let them drink nectar from deep inside a flower, reaching areas that other flies can't reach. That gave rise to their former common name, the American Heineken fly, a reference to an old ad run in the UK claiming that Heineken (beer) refreshes the parts other beers cannot reach. The American snout fly is a member of the hover fly or flower fly family (Syrphidae) depending on your preference. By the way, this guy grew up eating animal dung as that's what females lay their eggs on. I'll bet he's glad to be an adult drinking sweet flower nectar now!

The B38 local from Mason City to Savanna is back into Iowa after crossing the Mississippi River at Sabula. This job comes out of Dubuque as B38, setouts and pickups at Savanna, and rolls back to Dubuque now as B39 for Mason City. The crew has 26 cars, but will pickup a bunch of cars at Samoa and Dubuque to be a nice size train out of there. The train crosses a few causeways as the make their way from Savanna to the Marquette Sub at Lake including the drawbridge over the Mississippi River here at Sabula.
The Iowa Northern's Jordan works north on the Oelwein Sub towards Oelwein back in early 2021. Past Fairbank there hadn't been any trains for a few days, but in the end the drifts were pretty minor for the middle of February. Snow melts and light snow storms didn't produced much for drifts in early 2021 and the Jordan only got used twice that winter. Here the crew takes a quick break to chat with the MofW boss.
