Why did the snapping turtle cross the road? To lay her eggs of course. Mid-June is turtle nesting season here in the Driftless Region, and sloping sunny road ditches make perfect places for turtles to lay their eggs down in the soft warm dirt there. Unfortunately, many turtles get crushed by cars as they make that dangerous journey every spring. I moved this pregnant female off the road here in Lake Meyer Park today, though she didn't take kindly to my helping hands.

Tonight's a good time to show a bright colorful scene from last summer. Notice the very long antennae on this male dark-veined long-horned bee. These are his long "horns". Females would have much shorter antennae. If you look close you can even see his very dark-colored wing veins. Similar-looking long-horned bees would have lighter wing veins. This guy is quite colorful too with his gorgeous green eyes and orange thorax hairs. This lazy male doesn't do anything but mate with a female. Then she goes off and digs an underground tunnel about a foot deep. She'll then make many trips in and out of that tunnel to visit many sunflowers as she collects their nectar and pollen, piling up a mix of pollen and nectar at the bottom of the hole as food for her baby when it hatches from the egg laid on top of that food cache. Long-horned bee larvae pupate in the nest and emerge the following summer when black-eyed Susans and sunflowers start to bloom.
