“New Year's eve is like every other night; there is no pause in the march of the universe, no breathless moment of silence among created things that the passage of another twelve months may be noted; and yet no man has quite the same thoughts this evening that come with the coming of darkness on other nights” ~ Hamilton Wright Mabie
Happy New Year!

i12 came through the signals at Beaver on the NS Harrisburg Line with a beautiful pair of 4 axle locomotives, including a GP60 leader and an OLS painted GP59, both running long hood forward pulling 3 UPS trailers for New Jersey.

It's hard to put this one to words; a recent slide purchase taken from the very ground I became enamored with trains from the same era. It's April 1994 and an eastbound freight train is grinding uphill and laying sand through Gaithersburg on what appears to be a beautiful Spring day. It was this view that some of my earliest memories of watching this stuff is from. We'd be playing at the City Park (later renamed Griffith Park after my Great Grandfather, John W Griffith who was mayor in the 1960s) and as soon as us kids heard a distant train horn, we would run across the field to this ridge under the code line wires. The rise in elevation meant being eye-level with the engineers who usually waved back. Other excitement included playing on the parked equipment that sat near the museum, such as B&O I12 caboose C-2490 and Southern RPO #36 lurking in the background; the latter was owned by Jim Bistline who ran the steam excursion program on the Southern and later NS. Today, the code line is gone and the motive power is less exciting...but I always wave and toot the horn anytime I see onlookers waving at us from the hill on which I grew up watching these trains. The ancient celtic goddess of nature Laurel was able to take many different forms of disguise to blend into the landscape to avoid capture from her enemies or even to launch an attack.

Newly painted GP40-2LW 512 heads west with one hopper for Hendrix Wire north on the Hillsboro Branch flagging across the Cottage Street crossing at MP I12. The train is passing between old B&M passenger depot at left and the former freight house on the right.
As an interesting aside, tracks used to go right through the large "barn doors" on the left side of the freight house and cars were spotted right inside the building.

I was just in the process of cutting up a bunch of these blood oranges, and loved the light they were sitting in. The play of colors, highlights and shadows struck me as very Christopher Hirsheimer... one of my favorite photographers for her natural light and styling. Her photos in Frank Stitt's Southern Table simply blow me away.

Sitting on a beach chair, I was trying to see if I could get a few nice shots of sailboats. Looking to the side, at quite a distance, I had seen a local child playing in the water. All of a sudden I saw the dog come up and instinctively the boy ran towards him. I had barely enough time to frame up and click, and then the dog turned around and left. I was lucky!
This is my first attempt at the Lomo effect with a PS filter. I think the vignette creates a nostalgic view of childhood and tranquility that I at least so long for, in these days of hurried madness.

This area on the south side of I-12 west of the Amite River has more deer tracks than I can count. It looks like this is the place they go to hide while everyone else is out hunting.
Several places the grass is laid down like large numbers of deer sleep here.
Don't even stop here, its a protected area.
(FYI, Just left of this shot you can see I-12)
This annual Campanula species is known as Rough Harebell, as the specific name implies. It is known from open gravelly mountain slopes and talus but is not common in California: it occurs in the northwest and northeast of the State, for example on the upper slopes of Mount Eddy. It ranges north and east to other states such as Washington and Montana. It is seen here near South China Mountain in Siskiyou County, on July 21st 2012, image l I12-0316.

Lately a project on food photography teaming up with another renowned photographer David Ng.
So far we are both happy shooting exclusive cuisines as we get to taste it after the session...
Simple set-up. Just one studio lamp lighting through a diffuser (just tracing paper) from behind with a silver reflector from the opposite direction as fill. 2 small adjustable swivel mirrors carefully positioned and directed to reflect highlights on selected areas.
The simulated color of white wine was created simply by adding a teaspoon of coke to water.
Opening from Friday, 20th April 2012. Check it out and tell me about it.
Serving hours : 11.30am to 3pm (lunch), 6pm -10pm (dinner).
Le Petit Paradis is located at 125, East Coast Road @ Alibaba (opposite I12 Katong and Awfully Chocolate). Enjoy...

It has been raining heavily in the past few days, but the rain does something incredible to the air — it cleanses it.
The Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade (尖沙咀海濱長廊) is a high tourist-traffic spot, and it is easy to see why, because it offers an incredible view of the Hong Kong Island across the Victoria Harbour.
Today Rainbow Teddy and I packed the pano gear and gave this place a visit and it did not disappoint. Slaving 30 lbs (15 kg) of metal and glass across town was no fun, but sometimes it is worth the tug.
Here at last the curves are smooth and continuous with the pano head unlike my previous attempts. And look at the clouds! Hong Kong can be quite incredible sometimes—especially on days like this before the pollution comes back to clog the perfect harbor view.

Photography mostly has to do with framing, but photographing 360-degree panoramas possess a different kind of challenge as the frame is continuous, so it is mostly a matter of finding where to align the center point. For location which has perfect symmetry, I have found that putting everything dead center works out the best.
This was taken at the flag pole of the Ma On Shan Sports Ground. It has a relatively long exposure so as to hide the identity of participants. There was another shot where a man was seen stretching near me but noting that all the attention was given to him in this shot, I have chosen to publish this one instead. I will probably post the other one on my B-Reel Flickr account, which, since everyone is given unlimited space now, it might make sense for me to make use of them.
Also of note here is that the RGB combinations are not as pleasing as the CMYK spot colors. For those who asked me why I don’t use RGB as my identity, this is a perfect example why…
