House Finches can be found year-around in Michigan's Lower Peninsula, but they will move to another area if a food source is not readily available.
This picture was cropped from my picture taken at Lake St Clair Metropark.
The hike from Sailor Lake to Hungry Packer Lake, Inyo National Forest, California. A storm was threatening to roll in all evening, but never broke except for a few drops of rain.

Actually there were two hungry herons: me and the bird on the other side of the river. I waited and waited for him to do something interesting like catch a fish or fly off, but as is the way with my namesakes , it did nothing much. So I left him to it and went off to buy food for lunch.
(The yellow colour in the weir water is caused by peat dust picked up in the Dublin Mountains where the Dodder rises}.
mama warthog who didn't want to turn around for this photo with her three tiny tots always around her back legs at Addo...
From the second level of the observation tower, we surveyed the impoundment at Ding Darling NWR. There were very few birds to observe. Below us, amid the tangle of mangrove branches and various weeds, we noticed movement. Out popped this Green Heron onto a branch. He stabbed at something in the water and I took this shot just as he raised his head.
Anna's hummingbird (Calypte anna) is a medium sized hummingbird (3.5-4.5") native to the West Coast of North America. The reddish throat and head of the male looks dull brown or grey when not in direct sunlight. Seen in one of the garden beds at the San Diego Zoo. Conservation status: least concern

The spotted woodpecker is hungry and sits right in front of my bedroom window. Does he want to tell me "add food"?
The robin even flew into the bedroom. The window was open for ventilation, it came in, sat down on the radiator, looked at me and flew out again. But there is no photo of it *lol*
Just back from spending my birthday weekend looking for moose. I was not disappointed. This was a mom who also had her baby with her (pictures to come) munching on some yummies in a high elevation lake. No better way to spend a birthday in my opinion.
Catch up with everyone ASAP
I've had a family of thirteen-lined ground squirrels living in my back yard for many years. This female must have had her babies this week as I noticed she suddenly appeared slimmer and she's always scouting for food. These squirrels typically have a litter of 8-10 pups, weighing about 0.1 oz. at birth. Stripes begin to form at about 12 days, and eyes open at about 28 days at which time they leave the burrow to explore the world outside.
Many thanks for your visits, always appreciated!

Hungry, but not for human food...

This Great Blue was in the middle of hunting for lunch. We sat quietly and motionless and waited for him/her to catch the big one. Well, that never happened. Instead he caught a small squirming snack and both he and we were pleased with our catch. They may move slowly, but Great Blue Herons can strike with lightning like speed to grab a fish or snap up a gopher. The Great Blue is widespread and familiar (though often called "crane"), the largest heron in North America.
