Porsches are everywhere in Hong Kong, so I’ve wised up—there is no reason to go look for them on the street really, all I need to do is go downstairs to the car park and there is a healthy dose of them in very bright colors.
The 911s are my favorite Porsche model—the duck which speeds. Beautiful forms and very humanistic. It is an unassuming form which roars when it runs.

This is the setup I currently use for most of my panorama shots. It includes the following:
+ Canon EOS 6D. An affordable (and my first) digital full-frame body. Here shown without the battery grip, as it the Manfrotto 303SPH does not extend far enough for me to use the grip in order to setup the nodal center point correctly.
+ Canon EF 17-40 f/4L. The widest lens I own. This allows me to capture for as far as I can.
+ Manfrotto 303SPH pano head. For a cool 670 USD, this baby certainly does not come cheap for a slab of metals, but after wrangling with parallax I made the plunge to buy it. I have now shot several scenes both with and without the panoramic head and you can see that it does make a huge difference. It is quite heavy though.
+ Manfrotto 190XPROB tripod. This is a versatile tripod with an easily rotatable center-column which is nothing short of genius. It replaces the 3021BPro tripod which I previously own.
+ Canon TC-80N3. My remote release. You do need this to minimize vibration. A lot of my photos shot in crowdy areas are somewhat long-exposures. Longer exposure renders moving objects as a blur, and thus hides the identity of people, so if I choose to publish it I will not need to get model release from every single one.
This setup was used to photograph www.flickr.com/photos/seeminglee/9404825673/ — some of my followers have expressed that the tutorials are helpful so I will try to do some more tutorials presentations in the future.

I was going to PolyU to see a drama performance yesterday. Noting that I would pass through the Hung Hom MTR Station for this performance, I took the tripod and the Manfrotto 303SPH pano head with me so I can photograph the station on my way back home.
You can see that I have a similar shot earlier [1], which was a 360-degree pano shot without a panoramic head, and it was full of parallax error. But the earlier shot was done during rush hour so there were definitely more interesting things happening—you could do people watching, for example.
For this shot, the architecture is more pronounced, but more succinctly, you can see that although pano heads are not exactly cheap, they do serve a very functional purpose.
Stitched with 12 captures with the 6D + 17-40 f/4L. To accentuate the ceiling, these shots were angled 30-degree to the horizon, and thus require spherical projection to stitch accurately.

When I was young, I took the train to school everyday. Trains in Hong Kong are very crowded during rush hours, and when I was still little, when I look outside the window, all I see are these wires—wires coming together, wires coming apart, wires splitting, wires joining.
I have always wanted to photograph them but they are always so far away. Now that the 100-400 + 7D gives me an effective 640mm zoom, I finally get to have a clear look at them, and they are even more magical then I once imagined.
Pictured is a small section of them near the Heng On MTR station. The architecture in the back is the roof of some of the public housing development in Hong Kong.

The long escalator ride up from MTR (Hong Kong’s underground metro) station level to ground level.
I always wonder if the subway in Hong Kong is longer than most places in the world because the escalator ride is quite long. I have never timed nor measured it but it definitely feels at least three times longer than most subway station in New York.
So as usual, to kill time, I do photography. And these extreme perspective shots are really ideal for the full frame 6D + wide angle lens.

A city never sleeps because inside which lives humans which never stops going somewhere. This time-lapse video shows the pulse of a city through the rush hour traffic in Central in Hong Kong one gloomy evening.
For the soundtrack I had wanted something repetitive and Philip Glass came to mind. I had originally written something but thought that the video works best with something by Glass. To avoid licensing issues (mostly because I publish everything via CCBY), I found a MIDI file performed by Bertrand Robion on the web [1] and mixed it with some piano samples.

The elevated footbridge in Central near Exchange Square. Here you see one expect about pano which makes things interesting—it is possible to capture the same person twice. The guy on the right is the same person walking in the middle ground. The seams are not perfect because it is handheld but it shows just how extensive the footbridge network is in Hong Kong.
Stitched in Hugin using 7 RAW captures of the EOS M + 17-40 f/4L.

A collage of forms seen at the Ma On Shan Sports Grounds. Bright colors seem to be a main stay in sporting arena regardless of location in the world. Blue and yellow stripes always work. It looks like an Adidas retro sneaker to me. The circular rubber band and the curvature from the seats add a little bit of contrast without dominating.
If I could paint, this is what I would paint as well. As such this is part of the SML Paintings series also.

Repetitive yet dissimilar forms are most beautiful. Form follows function.
This staircase found at a public housing estate in Hong Kong features bright yellow paints painted on each step to help the predominantly elderly retired residents as they walk up each way.
SML Universe corporate colors are good for some things—even the Hong Kong Government seems to agree.

This is a 360-degree panorama of the bus terminal located at the Tsim Sha Tsui Ferry Pier in Hong Kong. Located at the south-most corner of Kowloon, it is the ideal location for bus companies to plan their last stop shuttling to other parts of Hong Kong.
The KMB (Kowloon Motor Bus) company started many of its first bus routes from this terminus, as noted by the bus numbers on the station, which ranges only in single digits — as opposed to the double- or triple-digit route numbers seen in most parts of Hong Kong.
Directly adjacent to the station (center in this photo) is the Star Ferry pier, which provides passenger ferry service to Hong Kong Island.
In this panorama, I have heightened the shadow area to expose the rust and dust of the awning covering the station. I am attracted to its geometric architectural forms and years of decay. You probably would not notice them when you walk by as they are well within the shadow areas, but as a lover for deadly objectives, it was a wonderful find for me.
Stitched together with 12 captures with the 6D + 17-40 mounted on the Manfrotto 303SPH pano head.

The Hung Hom Station (紅磡站), formerly known as Kowloon Station (九龍車站), is an MTR station on the East Rail Line and West Rail Line in Hong Kong. It is located next to the Cross Harbour Tunnel in Yau Tsim Mong District, Kowloon. It is one of the three Hong Kong ports-of-entry on the MTR network which connect directly to mainland China.
This 360-degree panorama was shot handheld with the 6D + 17-40 f/4L. It is handheld, so parallax error is unavoidable. I do not generally do location scouting for my photography, but with a proof-of-concept capture in hand I will definitely go back with my tripod — when I get my pano head. Any day now—seems it is a must buy item in my arsenal now that I started doing so many panoramic shots.
22 captures stitched using Autopano Giga 3, processed in Lightroom 4.

With one hand tucked inside his pocket and another holding the handle strapped with backpack wrapped onto the front, this cycler shows you how to cycle in the way that only Chinese knew how.
Like I said, almost all Chinese people in Hong Kong are 1337 hackers. They might not call themselves that way, but they most definitely know how to repurpose things in the way they see fit — aka hackers.

Getty licenses some of my photos on Flickr. And what have traditionally always gotten me into trouble is property releases. So now I have wised up—I just don’t include any identifiable objects in the photo—no property releases necessary.
Pictured is the gorgeous humanist forms of a Porsche found at the car park downstairs. Like I said, there are a ton of them here.
Mercedes-Benz’s and BMW’s are such a commonplace in Hong Kong that I can usually tell whether I am in Hong Kong or not just by looking at the traffic. If there are no Benz’s running within a minute I most certainly am not in Hong Kong.

More aerial goodness from way high up using a telephoto lens, mostly thanks to the awesome combination of the 70-200 f/4L + 1.4x Extender. If I buy the 70-200 f/2.8L then I will consider getting the 2x Extender but the 70-200 f/2.8L is a bit pricey for me right now—not to mention how heavy it is to go anywhere. If it is too heavy for me than it is unlikely that I would use it so although it is a nice to have, it is certainly not on my to buy list.

When you are driving, it is hard to see the speed limits. But traffic signs in Hong Kong are often placed on the ground. They are vertically scaled to match the eyesight of the driver.
These speed limits signage are seen on 西沙路 Sai Sha Road in 馬鞍山 Ma On Shan, a road in Hong Kong, which links together from Sai Kung District to Sha Tin District in the New Territories.

Buses in Hong Kong serve an important function—it transports people traveling long distances between remote areas and downtown. Although the metro (MTR) is fast, it is also very crowdy. The last thing you want after a day of work is stand inside a compressed train being pushed around.
Pictured is a bus terminal located in Central, the financial district in Hong Kong. It is situated at the ground level of Exchange Square, the building which also houses the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. A time lapse video of this area can be seen earlier in the stream [1].
This 360-degree panorama was stitched together using 15 captures on the 6D + 17-40 f/4L mounted on the Manfrotto 303SPH. Many people walked by as I was photographing this, but you do not really see them as this was shot with a relatively long exposure. I do this intentionally to hide the identity of the pedestrians.

I dread it when people ask me what I photograph, because I don’t really photograph anything particular that is deemed interesting to normal humans.
This is Hong Chong Road (康莊道), a road next to the Cross-Harbour Tunnel (海底隧道) in Hung Hom (紅磡). Far in the background is Hotel ICON (唯港薈), which is the teaching and research hotel built for The School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM 酒店及旅遊業管理學院) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) [1].
I photograph this because I like how the lines lead the eye through the frame. This is for my 中文字形 Chinese Typographic Forms series, where I find Chinese characters in a frame after noting that the concept of 形 Forms is not readily appreciated by the Chinese audience but they can relate to Chinese characters.

I have been on a roll for panoramas lately, but they are fun.
Bridges have great forms, but so do tunnels. Someone on Google+ commented that they don’t like the traffic in Hong Kong because it treats pedestrians as second-class citizens and stuck them underground—not true.
Tunnels allow pedestrians to cross the road without stopping traffic, so tunnels make it quick for pedestrians and cars alike to go through without stopping. It is a win-win urban-planning design.
On the far side you see some architecture with squares. Everyone in Hong Kong would immediately recognise that it is a school. Like I said before, the architectural forms are fairly standardized and they are instantly recognisable.

I was at 大明湖 Daming Lake working on my 中國旅遊 中国旅游 China Tourism photography series but I was fascinated with the diversity of transportation methods on the 明湖西路 Minghu West Road near the entrance.
There are no traffic lights on the road and the only way to cross it is to brave it over—and it is difficult. The video shows how an old man does it, and it takes quite a bit of effort.

Hong Kong’s bus stops are very long. Each stops usually have space to allow multiple buses “park” at the same time. They usually run along the highway, so having space for multiple buses to stop along the way is necessary. This enables high speed travel with stops along major districts.
You know why New York buses are inefficient? Because in New York every block is a traffic light. In Hong Kong the urban planning is different. Buses can run on highway all the time while sections of the pedestrian walk is crafted out for bus to stop.

When I was in college, I learned in my art history class that it is customary for artists to build structures which leads the eye from point A to point B. So I try to do it with my photography. It is hard for things which have a very defined subject matter. But for forms composition it is easier, because it is possible to utilize the lines found in architecture to create the necessary flow.
This is an outdoor staircase of a shopping mall in Hong Kong. stairs travel from far above all the way down to the ground level. There was door in the middle which I do not know lead where, but a security guard was standing there all the time while some people exited. I think it might be the exit for a cinema in the complex.
The street is buzzing with people, and as usual, the reflection from the marble surface allows you to get a glimpse of the city without dominating the frame. These are fun studies.
I don’t yet know how to apply these techniques in portraitures though. Chinese people are very private and do not usually wish to be photographed, making human form studies a nearly impossible task at hand. In that regard, I do miss New York.

Visitors can reach the peak of Mount Tai via a bus which terminates at the Midway Gate to Heaven, from there a cable car (纜車 缆车 pictured) connects to the summit. Covering the same distance on foot takes about two and a half to six hours. (1)
Each cable car takes 8 passengers. On the way up they forced pack us as sardines to the maximum capacity, but on the way down they let us go loosely and allows me room to do some photography.
The cable cars are completely enclosed, but there is a utility cable car which is open air (pictured first on the right). I would have loved to be able to get on that one as the plexiglass windows on the cable car are scratched due to weather battering and I could have taken some better picture if there is no window between my lens and the scene.

In most parts of the world, seeing high-performance sports cars on the road is a rare sighting. In Hong Kong, these exotic birds are everywhere are such a commonplace that no one really pays attention to them.
Pictured is a green Porsche 911 GT3 RS [according to Wikipedia it is also known as 977 GT3 RS (Porsche’s internal designator)] waiting impatiently behind a traffic light for his turn to roar while cranking his engines for all to hear—but as seen in the photo, no one pays much attention to its presence.
Designed as a higher performance version of the Porsche 911 sports car, the GT3 begins its lineage way back in 1973 as the 911 RS. The RS is short for the German RennSport, literally "racing sport" in English. 997 GT3 RS is the road car version of the 911 RS racing series.
I don’t know how to drive but I get my fair share of what is available in the market just walking around in random neighbourhoods in Hong Kong. Getting the newest + greatest + shiniest toys of all is a bizarre consumerism culture in Hong Kong. Observation is often a far better indicator for what may trend in the future than reading analytics reports (which are, by definition, history already).

The MTR stations in Hong Kong are color coded. Pictured is the station for 西灣河 Sai Wan Ho. Color coding stations serve a few purpose:
+ Recognizable during rush hours. If you have been on the metro in Hong Kong or Tokyo, you know that what NYC consider “crowdy” is no comparison. When you can barely move, there is no chance that you would be able to see what station it is in. But it is easy to see that you are surrounded by colors—yellow in this case.
+ Trans-cultural. Color coding transcends all language barrier. Although Chinese and English combined cover most of the languages spoken by the locals, travels to Hong Kong might not read these languages well. But most people (with the exception of the color blind, which is 1% male) would be able to recognise colors—so all they need to know is that they have to get off at the yellow station. This strategy works well for all.
+ Mood stabilising. Most of the colors utilised are in a heavy saturated spectrum. Colors have a psychological effect to humans. Whether you like it or not, cheery colors do relieve some of the stress. And workers in Hong Kong are highly stressed. Daily overtime is expected to most—and not just the bankers. I have found cheery paints painted on various public housing architecture in Hong Kong and I reason that perhaps any bit of ambient device can help.
I love design which serves a function. And the MTR is a great example of well done information design at work.

Tai Wai Station is an interchange station on the East Rail Line and the Ma On Shan Line of the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) system in Hong Kong. The station was originally opened in 1983 as an intermediate station of East Rail Line. In 2001, the station underwent expansion and construction ended in September 2004. The new concourse part was opened at first in the same month. Since 21 December 2004, the station has served as the terminus of the Ma On Shan Line, as well as the interchange station between these two lines. [1].
Pictured is the super long escalator which leads passengers from the ground station level to the platform. To cope with large amount of passenger traffic, most escalators go up only, and the exit going down are usually in the forms of staircases.
I usually try to leave photographs in colors when they work. Black and white photography does have its charms, but sometimes the colors add quite a bit.

The rush hour metro traffic in Hong Kong. World Bank recorded the population in Hong Kong to be around 7 million in 2011. Now in 2013 it is trending towards 8 million.
Someone commented on SML Facebook that it is interesting to see that the platforms in Hong Kong have an inner door. Aside from keeping the A/C inside, they serve a safety function also—keeping the crowd from falling into to the tracks.
Rush hour in Hong Kong is so crowdy that often you wait in line for multiple trains to come before you can get on the train. Thankfully, MTR in Hong Kong are always on time and very efficient. Usually the trains are only 2 minutes apart—likely timed to be the shortest possible time for safety.
I am claustrophobic so you can see why I don’t live in downtown urban area. It is so crowdy that no one has the bandwidth for all the mobile devices either.

If you are willing to look, interesting forms are everywhere. This look like an art installation to me, but is just marks left on the road. The text is cropped from an upside down “SLOW”, situated next to some road signs. But it is beautiful to my eye. I love seeing typography in the wild—whether they were intended as typography or not. It says something to me.

The Canon EF-M 22mm f/2 STM lens has a fairly severe vignette. When I switched on the profile lens corrections settings in Lightroom 4, I can see it fairly well. But for some captures the vignette is not really a bad thing—especially when what you wish to focus on is in the center of the frame.

This is a vertical panorama stitched using seven 7D RAW captures (at 98mm) of the entrance to 中環廣場 Central Plaza in Wan Chai, Hong Kong. Escalators at the entrance of the building are typical in Chinese architecture, as the ever flowing energy is similar to that of water, an important element in 風水 Feng Shui.
I never liked the design of the building. Most of the people in Hong Kong also question the naming of the building when it was built—although its name suggest that it is in 中環 Central, it is in fact located at Wan Chai—which is two MTR stops away.
# About 中環廣場 Central Plaza
This 78-storey, 374 m (1,227 ft) skyscraper was completed in August 1995 and is located at 18 Harbour Road, in Wan Chai on Hong Kong Island in Hong Kong.
It is the third tallest tower in the city after 2 IFC in Central and the ICC in West Kowloon. It was the tallest building in Asia from 1992 to 1996, until the Shun Hing Square in neighbouring Shenzhen was built. Central Plaza surpassed the Bank of China Tower as the tallest building in Hong Kong until the completion of 2IFC.

“Mind the gap” is the universal messaging on metros around the world. The 大學(東鐵)火車站 University MTR station’s platform gap is especially wide because the station was built before the modern trains were built.
Originally known as the Kowloon–Canton Railway (KCR; Traditional Chinese: 九廣鐵路) before merging with the MTR Corporation in 2007, the 東鐵 East Rail was part of a major railway network in Hong Kong since the 1910. In the old days there were no station platform—you get on the train from the ground level—so the gap was not really an issue.
Some gaps along the East Rail are so severe that special “extenders” were built which moves towards the train when the train stops. I will try to find one to show you what I mean the next time I go.
The University MTR station is the railway station for 香港中文大學 The Chinese University of Hong Kong. I know this station well because I spent my first 18 years in Hong Kong living on campus (my dad is a professor at CUHK) before I moved to the US for college.

Usually when you cross any tunnels inside a cab in Hong Kong, you pay double the toll fee so they can travel back.
But some taxi stands are special. This is known as the “過海的士 cross harbour taxis” taxis. As the name suggests, these are taxis which most likely originated from the other side of the 維多利亞港 Victoria Harbour so the cab driver would like a trip back on the other side (either Hong Kong Island side or Kowloon side) so that they can get off work without a long trip without customers. For these rides, the customer pays only single trip toll, so it is a win-win for both the customer and the driver.
Disgruntled cab drives abound during late night if you wish to travel across the harbour where getting a customer to come back with is not easy. This is not quite the reality where I get yelled at every day traveling from Manhattan to Brooklyn but actually made friends with a few cab drivers when I used to take a cab from Brooklyn to Manhattan every morning for work while I lived in New York.
Pictured: rows of red cabs line up at the 過海的士站 Cross-harbour taxi stand in 灣仔駱克道 Lockhart Road, Wan Chai waiting for customers. If you look closer there is a sign saying “Cross-harbour trips only; single toll charge” below the taxi stand sign. I have no idea why the taxi stand sign is half covered.

This photograph is stitched using 15 RAW image shot with the Canon EOS 7D + 70-200 f/4L handheld. Using long lenses create much less distortion for stitching and is generally preferred over wide-angle lenses—though there is more work as there are also more images to stitch. but the bright side of it is that the resulting panoramic photograph is also much higher in resolution.
For pano jobs like this I use Hugin, a free pano stitcher which handles the job much better than Photoshop. After stitching all fifteen of the 16-bit AdobeRGB TIFFs inside Hugin, it is then further processed inside Photoshop CS6 and Lightroom 4.
As with most handheld pano, it is sometimes challenging for me to figure out which area is covered so you see the staggering. I don’t want to crop it because field of view matters for context. I will probably go back and photograph it with a tripod when I have time in the future.

I got yelled at by the security guard at the car park so I guess I won’t be able to study forms here anymore. I don’t know why but photography seems to always get me into trouble. I just like the way the lines move. They do not identify anything. But then the police or security guards will woo me away—which is very annoying.
I guess I will just need to find a car show in LA near where my sister live instead. Hong Kong does not seem to have any car shows, though the street itself is basically a living car show, with people driving the latest anything all day long.
When I say the latest. I meant the latest—last month I went to do some shoe shopping and picked out a pair which I liked, and the salesman looked at me and said: “You _do_ realise that that model is 2 months old, right?” Like I was crazy or something.
Oh, humans.

Faces are everywhere. I did not take this photo because it looks like a face. I liked the proportion of the forms. But when I started working on it I can’t help but notice the logos from the Transformer movie / toys series. Once registered it is difficult to not see them anymore. Perhaps subconsciously I am drawn to the proportions because it is similar to a face? Feel free to analyse me.
This is a photo of the Ma On Shan MTR station. The ladder like forms are the train tracks. The entire Ma On Shan Line runs parallel and above the highway as an elevated track. The station is located below the tracks in the yellow area, and is connected to two shopping malls.

Usually car parks are built underground. But here in Hong Kong, some car parks are built above ground high up in buildings.
I don’t really know why this is, but I would reason that it might have to do with structural engineering. Most of the lands in Wan Chai were landfilled. There are also a huge networks of tunnels connecting all kinds of MTR lines underneath the downtown area. So it may be more economical and structurally sound to just build the car parks upstairs instead of downstairs. Thus creating these rather uncommon sights.

Stairs are awesome—especially as a stereographic panorama, as I have found. Maybe Escher had the foresight. This one was created using 360Pano, an freely available iOS + Android app.

Sometimes when I photograph physically large things they appear to be microscopic images. This is one of those times. It is the ceiling covering an outdoor escalator in Central, Hong Kong. But it appears almost like some kind of tank tracks in a sci-fi movie. Abstract forms are interesting that way—a single image tinkles the mind for millions of possibilities. I think that this might be why I also have a preference for abstract paintings which evoke emotions and energy.

A collage of forms, accented by the echoes of colors and lines.
The afternoon sun casts a warm shadow of a baby carriage on the footbridge. Below the bridge, a man in blue sweater walks casually across a zebra crossing. The lines of the zebra crossing is shielded by the bridge, thus it would appear as if the man is on the same plane when in fact is is very far away. The S in “SLOW” is obscured so you see the word “LOW” instead. The white markings not the road leads the eye to the lower right as well as the upper right, which is the entrance to a car park, where the yellow warning signs echo nicely with the warm glow of the afternoon sun.

Unlike mainland China, bicycles are not considered a primary form of transportation. But bicycle lanes are everywhere in Ma On Shan, and people do ride it everywhere. Cycling is a good form of exercise.
In Hong Kong, you can ride along the 3.2 km long Ma On Shan promenade spanning an area of 5.2 hectares (sometimes pictured in my “Serenity” series) while enjoying the beautiful scenery of the Tolo Harbor and Sha Tin Hoi.
I don’t exercise much these days so I might get a bike to do it. Of interest: although the promenade itself is a smoke-free zone, ashtrays are provided along the cycling lane. I don’t think that I have ever biked and smoked before. There will always be a first time, I suppose.

The view from inside the 纜車 缆车 cable car going up the summit. Space is very tight on our way up so I took this using the G12. I typically travel with four cameras: Canon EOS 7D, Canon G12, iPad, iPhone — and now also the Canon EOS M.
The Canon G12 supports RAW so it allows greater flexibility even though it is housed inside a point-and-shoot casing. The EOS M I have found to be good at taking video shots but so far its focusing has been very slow so I would likely continue to bring my G12 with me on future travels.
I get annoyed sometimes with the reflection from the window, but sometimes those reflection makes more interesting natural contrast of forms with the scene which I do like.

A Mercedes-Benz sped by a bus stop outside a public housing development in Hong Kong. These architectural designs with supremely clean lines appear to be a mainstay in these newer properties. Open air corridors appear to be an energy-saving feature which is seen in both public housing old as well as new.

Mount Tai (Chinese: 泰山; pinyin: Tài Shān) is a mountain of historical and cultural significance located north of the city of Tai'an, in Shandong province, China.
Mount Tai is one of the "Five Great Mountains". It is associated with sunrise, birth, and renewal, and is often regarded the foremost of the five. Mount Tai has been a place of worship for at least 3,000 years and served as one of the most important ceremonial centers of China during large portions of this period. (1)

Identifiable humans in photos have traditionally caused me problems in the past because of various laws covering model releases for licensing. But I have now identified the solution to this—photographing their legs only, with caps, thus completely anonymous but yet add every bit of life to otherwise cold forms.
人氣 (literally human air) is the technique used in Chinese traditional paintings. The idea is that having a human figure, no matter how faint, adds a bit of life to the composition. And it seems to be working better now.
I really enjoy this collage of forms seen at a public housing development near me. There are very interesting lines moving the eye across different parts of the image, while the person gives it a bit of suggestive motion leading off the page.
