After Santa Fe was off to Houston the following week to attend The Nature Conservancy's All Science Conference - was great to see so much great science and see people I hadn't seen in years and meet so many new folks - go TNC!

I did some furniture painting today and I was wondering, is it possible to paint something without getting paint on you? I can't seem to do it. Luckily, I didn't get any on my clothes this time

I'm pretty sure this wasn't meant to be a bench but this guy is using it for one so that makes it a bench today ..;) I don't really know anything about this sculpture or art work because I was busy taking the picture and not paying attention to the tour guide. Cutting my vacation short because of the bad weather. It has rained everyday except today and more rain is forecasted for the next 3 days. Plus, it's cold. i may try to squeeze in a mini vacation before March.
This was downtown Houston, so if any of your Houston people know anything about this let me know
This place has it all. Not sure why an Aquarium has Tigers but it did. I post those pics later. The Shark exhibit was closed, not sure why and the adult Ferris Wheel was undergoing maintenance but all the children's rides were working. There was a restaurant there that our friends said had great food but we didn't eat there. I wanted to wait and eat in Galveston
This is another one from Houston. And, I didn't take notes while on the tour so I don't know anything about the art work. Maybe some of my Houston contacts can help out.
For the eclipse, I didn't get any pictures. I went outside and it was too cloudy to see anything so I went back into the house. My neighbor said the clouds opened up just at the right time. Oh well. It did get really dark and fooled the bugs. I had a guy from Scotland staying in my Bed & Breakfast who was here for the Eclipse along with a couple from Pennsylvania

Yes, another one from the space center. I actually sat on this bench for a few minutes Because it was facing the cargo hole and I was trying to figure out why. My guess is they used it to make presentations. I thought about live bands but no enough seats. There was no one to ask so I moved on ..:)
If I have a favorite type of movie, it's SciFi. Something about this made me think of movies where the Earth is invaded. This cold, cold weather is condusive to contrails and I do love them. It's my favorite kind of sky.
If you haven't seen Avatar - it's a must see. One of the best movies I've ever seen. It was 15 years in the making, from concept to technology making it possible and putting it on the screen in IMAX 3D. If there's an IMAX near you then that is the only way to see this movie. Wonderful!
Who else would be the subject of my maiden voyage in using Lightroom and Photoshop in conjunction. Making the big leap to using both programs as I've been solely using Lightroom for processing? Why it is the most beautiful and photogenic jaguar in the whole world - Miss Cocoy.
If you are looking to expand your knowledge of any graphics program, I highly suggest lynda.com. I don't think there is a program that exists that they do not cover.
Street sign says Chilton Road. My guess would be this was Tulsa or Oklahoma City, Oklahoma or Houston, Texas. Can anyone say for sure? OK, I checked Mapquest, and there isn't a Chilton Road in OKC or Tulsa, but there is one in Houston, It goes near San Felipe, and my parents had an apartment on San Felipe. Can anyone rule in or rule out that Chilton Road had these kind of Street Signs and Light combinations at about the end of WWII? This was taken about 1944 - 1945.
Also, I'd like to identify the automobile. Thanks.
The child is one of my 2 siblings. The man is Arthur Kaye Dawson and the woman is Ruby Leigh Dyer Dawson. My guess is Ruby and Art drove down to Houston from Tulsa, Oklahoma to see their new grandson. They are my grandparents on my mother's side.

I've taken this same shot with different lenses for the last two years. Today was the day. POW - here is the shot I was looking floor.
Confession. I laid straight on the ground and shot up. Just about the time I was standing up, the hired gun came out and chased me off. She said: "You can't take pictures."
Oh, but I did.

For locals who love Mercer Gardens & Arboretum, as we do, here's what we found out yesterday. The Arboretum is open, all trails. It's a little ragged in spots but definitely not as heavily damaged as I had feared. The Gardens are closed and no expected date to open soon. Damage was heavy in the bog area toward the back of the gardens. The young lady we spoke to on the trails said that it appeared that a tornado had touched down. The walkways were destroyed and trees are down. It will take time to replant, time to repair the walkways, just time and patience until everything cleaned up, repaired and is as it should be to reopen.
Thought to be the oldest tree in Harris County, the history of this tree can be traced back to the days of the Replublic of Texas when it was used to hang convicted criminals. In 1896, a new courthouse and jail were built. Prisoners were hanged inside on a scaffold. Family and friends of those hanged waited outside under the old oak and mourned their death.

For the record, only adjustments in post-processing were minor adjustments in Curves and a bit of vignetting.
The old Farmer Credit Bank stands in front of Heritage Plaza, Houston's fourth tallest building.
Something about the mix of old and new architecture makes my eyes a wee bit giddy.
Rather than stand in the middle of the road, I stood on the side and was able to lose the pesky lightpole that wanted to be in the shot. I'm not sure which one I like the best. Of course, I'm so tired my eyes are crossing - so I might not have the best of judgements at the moment.
Unfortunately, no one has come along and offered to support me in high style for absolutely nothing in return, so I have to do the 8 to 8 job. One day, I'm going to throw it all away and join the circus.
