A large rove beetle with extended exposed abdomen covered by hardened plates and composed of 8 segments. Uniformly black body covered in fine, black hairs (setae). Shortened wing cases (elytra) which cover the thorax, concealing a folded second pair of wings which enable flight.
I was milling around with a few other folks watching the activity at the river crossing late this afternoon. The action was pretty intense about now. There were horses in the trees behind me, bands of horses across the river, in the river, down the river. There was a lot going on and it was tough to decide what to focus on. Someone nearby said something like, "uh oh, trouble coming, look out behind you". I whirled around and pointed the camera, just in time to watch the chestnut body-slam and then kick at the gray. Geez.
Looking at the gray now, and the Righty gray in my post from yesterday, it's conceivable it's the same horse as this image is about 20 minutes before the gray pair posted yesterday. If that's so, then in the image from yesterday Lefty could be saying to Righty "Good job, you held your own against that rambunctious body-slammer." Furthermore, I'm elated I got any pics at all of this - straight into the setting sun practically. Lucky camera settings...
Somewhere in time's own space
There must be some sweet pastured place
Where creeks sing on and tall trees grow
Some paradise where horses go,
For by the love that guides my pen
I know great horses live again.

The longest day of the year and a perfect early morning walk at Stanpit Marshes Christchurch. The horses gathering on the spit of land. Mudeford beach huts in the background. It really is a beautiful part of the world

I was at the Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park on Monday, December 9, 2024. I was at the end of the Bolin Bluff Trail when I came across Theas beautiful wild horses. He wasn't scared of people at all, and I was able to get lots of pictures of them. What amazing creatures!

With a name like Maritime a bit of mist and fog isn't going to bother you to much . 66727 is seen passing through a very gloomy Primrose Hill whilst working the 6E42 0715 Cliffe Hill Stud Farm - Doncaster Down Decoy .
