I'm off to Google to learn more about Canadian Thanksgiving and how it came about.
I'm familiar with my own Thanksgiving celebration here in the U.S. featuring the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony and the feast they shared with the Wampanoag/Massasoit tribe of Native Americans. But I'm ashamed to admit that I don't know the origins of the Canadian celebration. So! No more waffling about; it's time to educate myself.
When I celebrate my own Thanksgiving on November 26th, I will be giving thanks for many things, including flickr and the opportunity it has given me to meet so many wonderful people from the U.S. and Canada. I have learned that we are more alike than different and we all basically want the same things from our lives.
In the meantime, it's my sincere wish that everyone in Canada has a wonderful Thanksgiving, and the chance to share marvelous food with loving family and dear friends. Take care, stay safe, and come back to tell us about your holiday!

On May 29, 2014, the Hayward Public Library honored tutors and students at its 6th year-end Homework Support Center recognition event. Lindsey Vien, the Library and Community Services Education Services Coordinator, delivered this speech and year-end report:
"I have had the pleasure to work with this program since its start and I can’t express how proud I am to see how much it has grown.
"Ghandi once said, 'Be the change you wish to see in the world.' The Homework Support Center is a direct reflection of this grand idea. You, volunteer tutors, students, and parents, have come together as a community. Tutors, you donate your time each and every day to students who are hungry to learn. Parents, you diligently bring your children to the program and encourage them to learn. Students, you eagerly wait in line with a smile on your face, and spend all afternoon perfecting your homework. We are learning together and are building a stronger community of life-long learners. Not only are our tutors teaching our students; our students our continually teaching us more about ourselves and our community. Be proud to say, 'I am made in Hayward!'
"Through this unique partnership between the City of Hayward and Hayward Unified School District, we have been successful in expanding after-school homework support to eight school sites, in additional to its original two Library-based locations. The program currently serves nearly 3,000 students.
"It is through continued innovation and valuable partnerships with our local community and local institutions of higher learning: Cal State University East Bay and Chabot Community College that we have been able to recruit and inspire local college students to give back to their community through the Homework Support Center. This year, 187 tutors assisted students with their homework, donating 6,751 hours to our program. 34,517 non duplicated homework assignments were completed, and nearly 1,000 library cards were issued to students who did not previously have a card.
"In addition to our tutor and student population, I’d like to take thank our exceptionally talented and dedicated Homework Support Center Team. Without your continued dedication and leadership at your Homework Support Center Sites, our program would not be possible: Christian Valiente, Martha Morales, Ellen Chang, Joanna Bromstread, Emiliano Perez, NyTasia McGee, Liliana Rocha, Sierra Warren, Naqia Yasini, Chidimma Igboegwu, Shayla Tommila, Mariel Valerio, Alfredo Figueroa, and Sally Thomas, our Adult Services Librarian who has been working with school site populations on educating parents about the Library’s additional educational and online services. Let’s give a round of applause for our leaders!
"Let’s continue to make this program a success. Together, we can be the change!"
