A view to the west from the town of Höfn in Iceland 076s092-158_edited-1

Thought I'd do an evening reconnaissance trip to Stokksnes despite our late arrival in nearby Hofn and the unpromising weather. Clouds were moving in and never cleared but at least they provided a dramatic mood over Vestrahorn.

Höfn is an Icelandic fishing town in the southeastern part of the country. It lies near Hornafjörður fjord.

The town, the second largest in the southeastern part of Iceland, offers scenic views of Vatnajökull (the largest ice cap in Europe by volume). The community was formerly known as Hornafjarðarbær between 1994 and 1998.

Höfn is located on a peninsula in the southeast of Iceland. The name Höfn means harbour and it is a fishing port surrounded on three sides by the sea, with beaches on a long shoreline to the southeast. Shoals and glacial rivers traverse this area with many shifting lagoons and sand reefs being formed. Höfn is surrounded by several small islands to the east of the town, the largest of which is Mikley, followed by Krókalátur and Hellir.

Nearby areas include Suðursveit, Öræfasveit, Lón, Mýrar and Nes. In Nes there is a small village called Nesjahverfi. Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland, is about 458 kilometres from Höfn along the south coast. The headland of the town is called the Ingólfshöfði, which is 76 metres high and 85 kilometres from the town. Sea birds such as skuas, guillemots, fulmar and puffins can be seen from the headland.

Höfn was founded by the merchant Ottó Tuliníus in 1897 who relocated a trading place which had been established in 1861 from Papós, an area 15 kms northwest of Höfn, to the present site of the town. Höfn had 300 inhabitants in 1946. An economic boom started after the construction of the bridge Hornafjarðarbrú in 1961, and with a length of 255 metres the bridge was the second largest bridge in Iceland at that time. Höfn attained municipal status on 31 December 1988 and had 1 647 inhabitants in 1989. Höfn and the community of Nesjahreppur were united on 12 July 1994 under the name Hornafjarðarbær. On 6 June 1998 Hornafjarðarbær, Bæjarhreppur, Borgarhafnarhreppur and Hofshreppur were united to form the new municipality of Sveitarfélagið Hornafjörður

We arrived in Höfn late in the evening, and what a joy it was to see Lady Aurora give us such a warm welcome!

We have just got back from a trip to Iceland. It has been on my travel wish list for some time. The scenery is stunning. These are a few of my favourite photos.

After the lovely meal it was time to leave Vik and drive to our next cabin at Höfn. It is a few hour drive and the way the landscape keeps changing as you follow the main road to the east is absolutely beautiful. This has a lot to do with Vatnajökull, the biggest glacier in Europe, which you already see from miles and miles ahead, and where you end up driving with the impressive formations of ice and rocks constantly on your left side.

The first stop however came a lot quicker then I thought. I guess around a 3 minute drive actually. In Iceland goes the famous saying: “If you don’t like the weather, just wait for 5 minutes.” And indeed after the storm, the skies suddenly started to open again and created really interesting clouds and light. This little church with the heavy clouds above it and a bit of soft light coming from the side just begged to be photographed. A lot of churches in Iceland have these white walls with a red roof, which makes them really photogenetic. So I quickly pulled the car over, jumped out and made this shot before continuing the journey in the also amazing south-eastern part of Iceland.

The SF 52 Akurey has been sited on the quayside in Höfn and is described as a monument boat/being preserved. I have struggled to find information online, but she appears to have been in service as a fishing boat from 1963 until 1992. Her deck is sometimes open for tours but our out of season visit meant that this wasn't the case.

Jökulsárlón lake and Breiðamerkurjökull glacier.

The icebergs dragged by the current end up in the sea and, at the end of their journey, stop on the beach.

A nice contrast between the white / blue of the ice and the black of the volcanic sand.

After a decent day the winds picked up very strongly indeed...I remember struggling to stand still taking this, and it was quite a scary night in our log cabin!

... Stockness. Iceland.

There are no emissaries towards the Atlantic Ocean and, therefore, the icebergs are destined to melt inside the lake.

In the final stage of their life, icebergs take on strange shapes.

Generally, I found that as the day draws to a close, the constant wind tends to die down a little. A few weeks ago Iceland was experiencing some uncharacteristically hot and sunny weather. being in June it was 24-hour sunlight. This allowed for some long exposure work along the coast, without the need to constantly check for tripod shake and poor sharpness. Happy days :-)
