The remnants of Hurricane Hilary passed through Idaho, making for spectacular sunsets for a couple of nights in a row. This view is looking south on Lake Cascade, which is in the western part of the state. The water level of the lake, which is actually a reservoir for irrigation, had dropped significantly over the past couple of weeks and I was able to walk half way out into the lake on a land bridge that recently appeared.

Spoke with a friend last night and a planned weekend reading Hilary Mantel's final installment of Wolf Hall turned into a three hour sleep, a 04:15 start, and a mad dash down the A55.
I was watching the sky the whole way and it was looking angry but perfect. I think I must've mimicked some of that anger when we hit the 40mph average speed roadworks, with zero cones and zero workmen for what seemed like 20 miles. I probably muttered a few choice words, especially when every McDonalds on the way was closed and I'd not had a morning coffee. Hell hath no fury like an Adrian without his morning coffee.
I normally do a fair bit of research before going to a new place but didn't have any time so had no idea what to expect. I knew I wanted to take the cliched shot of the boats tied up but had no idea how long the walk was. 06:10 with the sky on fire and sunrise at 06:11 and we were still a good 5 miles away plus however long the walk took.
Fortunately the sky just got more and more intense and we soon realised we were in for an absolute treat. Sat Nav took us to the parking spot and the walk from the Western edge of the lake down to the boats is only a 200m stroll with a couple gates to negotiate.
The wind was ridiculous, gusting to 60 mph as the Easterly blew down the valley directly in our faces.
I'd had visions of it being still and tranquil with low mist on the lake and a little colour in the sky like the fantastic shots I've seen of here. I tried a few long exposures but the boats were far too blurry and the wind had whipped up waves that were actually breaking. Pretty sure it's unusual for an Easterly to be blowing here and the mountains on either side acted as a funnel so we felt the full force of the venturi effect.
Spent about an hour being battered and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it but we opted not to make the walk around the lake, instead retiring to the safety of the car and making a hugely welcoming brew.
Very testing conditions and frozen to the marrow but what a fantastic location.
