The highlands in eastern Kyrgyzstan leading to the Tien Shan mountain range are a vast almost uninhabited region bordering to China.
Cameron Highlands is the largest tea-growing region in Malaysia - home to vast plantations of this valuable crop that carpet the valleys in a lush sea of bright green. Tea was also one of the precursors to its development as a hill station, before its transformation into a major tourist destination.

Amazing Scottish Cottage on a road near Gairloch in the North West Highlands. A lone cottage with only one tiny window visible and large mogul type hills behind - couldn't resist it
So this week marks the beginning of fall. Today it is 82 degrees here in Fort Lauderdale..a little cooler that it has been. It is in the 60"s in Highlands, N.C. where this was taken..and it is raining..hopefully replenishing the waterfalls. Headed up that way soon and hoping for some great fall color. Shaped by the antagonism of ice and fire, the South Highlands of Fjallabak offer landscapes like no other. Green meadows, lava fields, pristine glaciers, black sand beaches, blue iceberg lagoons, basalt fortresses, crystalline waterfalls, powerful rivers, volcanoes pretending to sleep, flooded bogs, fumaroles in the shape of rainbows flood succeed and renew endlessly. While the ocean in front of so many wonders is not left out and spreads its power and its immensity, launching its rolls and its millions of pelagic birds to conquer this land that was supposed to stay at the bottom of the abyss.

A Red Deer stag stand unconcerned among the heather covered hillsides of Glen Muick in the Scottish Highlands. Only about 6 meters (20 feet) away from me he was totally at ease with my presence.

Earlier this month, before the partial lockdown or movement control order here, I managed to get away for a short break up in the cool highlands which is famous for its tea, vegetables, flowers and pot-plants, all grown commercially. This is a view of one of the tea plantations.
This image, photographed in the Icelandic highlands, is one of the favourites from my trip. Perhaps surprisingly, I made the image with my iPhone.

I was so desperate to escape the rat race, so desperate to find some meaning to life, I never really took the time in advance to consider what living up here would be like. I just went. Didn't look back. Escaped.
Now, after more than a year, I feel at home more than I could have anticipated. Letting my Highlander blood flow freely through my veins again.And now we are seeing the place in winter, I realise it is more beautiful than I originally thought. Not much makes you feel at one with the world than noticing a deer watching you, almost peering over your shoulder. I feel very grateful to friends and family who make me feel this good because a year and a half ago I was totally miserable, lost and lonely. Covid and WFH ate at my soul like a maggot in the core of an apple. To the point where I wondered if it was worth going on.
