After years of fog-less weather in Birmingham where I live, the last few weeks have been fog-tastic! This was taken on a lunch-time walk through my local park.

This otherwise unremarkable block of 1960s flats belies the fascinating history of this site. 'The Highbury Athenaeum' was originally opened in 1882 as a literary and scientific club. It was also licensed for musical entertainment and gradually became a music hall, the original high aspirations of creating a centre of intellectual rigour having been frustrated. The music hall closed in the 1920s, and in the 1930s the Rank Film Company acquired the building, turning it into a 'charm school' to train up aspiring young actresses - alluring screen siren Diana Dors* was one of its graduates. After the Second World War it was used by ITV to produce television shows, including 'Emergency Ward 10' where most of the interior scenes were shot here. External scenes were often shot in the immediate vicinity. The stuudios closed in 1960. Sadly, there is nothing at all here to indicate the fascinating history of this site, save for the use of the Athenaeum name for the flats that were subsequently built here.
* Diana Dors was born Diana Fluck, the daughter of a railway worker from Swindon. There is a story that her father was upset when she decided to change her surname, but Diana explained that it was necessary, because what would happen if her name was up in lights - and the 'L' went out?

Quite a bit of the busy 19 service turned round here, even though it was only just short of the final destination of Finsbury Park. I think the RT was a substitution for an RM. This was summer 1975.
