Taken on my visit to Gombe Stream National Park. This viewpoint is located mid-way up the escarpment seen rising on the left. To the right and a few hundred feet down is Lake Tanganyika. This very spot is where Dr. Goodall sat every day for about 6 months before she encountered her first chimpanzees. She could hear them in the forest. I was sent to train a couple of researchers stationed at Gombe where the chimpanzees were being monitored. I was giving instruction on how to identify internal parasites in the chimps as well as offer suggestions for their tiny electricity-less laboratory. This was part of a hands-off monitoring of these animal's overall health. Ascertaining the parasite loads and types were being evaluated to see if they correlated with disease or occult disease. The animals are monitored by trained trackers who know each animal individually. If any of the chimps showed signs of disease their feces could be collected and assayed for parasites. An increase or change in the numbers or types of organisms implies a challenge to their immune systems which could affect their overall health.
