In Dhaka city, fresh (literally) fruits are perhaps some of the rarest things to find. Most fruits which are locally produced are dipped in preservatives (Formalin) in the orchards, and the imported ones are dipped in preservatives or industrial colors right after they reach our land. No one cares.

Because the authorities who are supposed to regulate such malpractice suffer from lack of manpower, scientific equipment and personnel with specialized knowledge.

Strange thing is, people hardly seek treatment. Is it likely that people of Bangladesh are developing resilience against these poisonous chemicals?

Happy Sliders Sunday!

MORNING LIGHT THOUGHTS . . . at the Artist's Colony.

My brother is older than me and became a photographer first when he was in high school. He was on the Yearbook Staff; he shot black and white for the newspaper. His friends were photographers; he went to a photography school after high school graduation. People throughout the state knew my brother as a photographer.

As far back as I can recall, my brother took photos. The one I'll always recall was of the Grand Canyon, before he'd practiced much photography and wasn't a professional. My brother is a natural photographer, much better than me.

But one of the things my brother and I share is a great-grandmother who was completely blind and we share an entire series of mysterious vision issues.

My brother was a wedding photographer for decades and use to shoot dances and proms and other things professionally. He knows and knew film and developer and darkrooms. Then his vision began to decline.

I don't know what my brother thinks. Maybe he believes that all of photography depends on the eyes, but I believe photography starts in the heart, in the soul, in the mind and spirit. Those things have only deepened in him as he's grown older; he can now see things with his heart that he could never see with his perfect, youthful vision.

So what, my brother's vision is not perfect? So what?

A art museum curator once told me that in order to become an artist, a person must first live life and have something to truly say about life with their artistic skill. The skill may come along young, but the voice and inner vision matures later.

I hope my brother will begin experimenting with digital photography. As a darkroom/lab photographer, my brother knows more about photography than nearly any youth-filled pixter who owns a digital point and shoot. There's a place for all.

Sometimes, we just need to borrow someone else's vision of ourselves before we can see that tucked within we still have a song yet to sing before we leave this earth. Or in my brother's case, we still have memories to record and visual beauty to impart.

I'm the natural writer, artist, and occassional poet of the family, but my brother is the natural photographer. Whether he picks up another camera again or not, he always will be a natural photographer.

On August 5, 1998, while I was Railfanning in Downtown Tampa, I stopped at Tampa Union Station to once again Photograph the Florida FUN Train, after it's grade crossing accident. Because the startup of the FUN TRAIN had been under capitalized, the dreams of the Fun Train creator, of featuring two Fun Trains, (one on each coast of Florida) were extinguished in Bankruptcy.

But of much greater interest, was the Anti-Tobacco Train seen here in these Photographs. I'm not sure who organized the Anti Tobacco Rally or funded the Train, which apparently was touring the United States to illustrate the Health Issues of Smoking, however it presented a great Photographic Opportunity for me. As we all know, Smoking causes several debilitating diseases, such as Lung Cancer, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (aka: COPD) and Emphysema.

I took these photographs with my Minolta Maxxim 5000 SLR using Color Print Film, when I was just learning photograph; so they are very soft & grainy. I scanned the Negatives and used Photoshop Elements to correct the exposure and to generate these Digital Images.

Disclaimer: Since I took these photographs while I was still learning Photography, some of my original Photos are of poor quality in both Exposure and Sharpness, which I could only partially correct with Adobe Photoshop Elementsâ„¢.

This is what's happening at one party. I think I'm supposed to say that smoking is bad and stuff. To think how much money all these people smoked... Well, I'm lucky that I didn't smoke any of these.

By the time you have your dog its behavior will have already been greatly influenced by his mother and his siblings. Here’s an example: If his mother barked to attract some attention, her puppies will probably behave in the exact same way. The experiences that occur between three and twelve weeks of age are crucial in the development of a dog’s personality.

February 11th 2009 Following my mental health photo earlier in the month I was challenged to make a positive version to aid recovery - this is the answer to that challenge.

The statistics don't paint a hopeful picture: 1 of 3 Americans is seriously overweight and/or in route to obesity. This week there's a huge debate about New York's Mayor Bloomberg's attempt to forbid the sale of the 20oz cups (extra large) of sugary drinks in fast food places, cinemas, malls, etc. Like usual, many Americans jump ferociously against the proposal, calling it "an attempt at communism, to have our governments tell us what we can or can't do with our lives". The usual rhetoric...

And yet, every month thousands and thousands die of heart-related disease, diabetic complications and other consequences of an unhealthy life style. And let's be honest... No one NEEDS to sit down at a bar or at a movie with a greasy extra-large popcorn or a plate of cheesy nachos, and a gigantic soda that has probably the equivalent of half a bag of sugar in it... Once again, just because we CAN eat and drink whatever we want to, does NOT mean we HAVE TO.

In this year, I've started taking small steps into healthier eating habits. I'm not doing any strict diet by any means, but I'm trying to have fruits and nuts instead of processed snacks or chips or ice cream if hungry between meals, cut on alcohol and heavy sugars, and moderate the dairy and red meats. Add to that walking just a bit more on average every day than usual, and even without a gym I've lost about 12 pounds in a few months.

A few nights ago, an interview with a Doctor on CNN showed me a horrifying reminder to behaving better and committing a bit more. He showed on screen a regular/healthy human heart and liver. And then, the ones of a seriously overweight person. For this last case, the heart was more the size of a watermelon rather than a grapefruit (horror!) and the fatty liver had not only almost doubled in size, but turned yellowish from excess of fat, or as the doctor said, "become human foie gras" (that's a concept that made me gasp in horror and that I can't shake off my head every time I see a cupcake or a huge bacon cheeseburger with fries around me now).

After my dehydration syncope episode in Jerusalem a month ago, I was concerned enough to get a large blood test work done upon my return to Helsinki last week. Yesterday i had an appointment with my doctor to hear the results. All is well, thank goodness. I am a healthy person :-) She thought the problem was my low blood pressure.

"And so what do we learn from this?" she asked me with a big smile and answered: "Drink more water and eat more salty stuff !"

I wish all problems were as simple to solve.
