The genus includes hundreds of species commonly found in Europe, North America, and Asia.

An old favorite with a winter theme. A brief break in the weather provided some blue sky in between snow storms and the river was exceptionally still at sunset.

UP LOW20, the El Segundo local, passes the wigwag crossing signal at Eucalyptus Avenue in Hawthorne. This is one of the four remaining wig wag signals in Southern California. As you can see on the left, replacement signals have been waiting to be cut in for quite some time. Leading the way is one of UP's distinctive SD59MX rebuilds.

A trio of former Milwaukee Road EMD GP20s, now owned by Chicago Central & Pacific, depart the CC’s locomotive facility at Hawthorne Yard at Cicero, Illinois, on November 22, 1986. These EMD GP9s are now 2,000 h.p., rebuilt by Milwaukee and classified as GP20s. No. 972 is patched and relettered for CC, while No. 981 and 973 still retain (mostly) Milwaukee Road lettering.

NYSW SU-99 notches up through Hawthorne as it accelerates to track speed. The old concrete whistle post contrasts with this SD70M-2, which is less than two decades old and now serves the Susquehanna after its initial stint with NS ended. The modern power evokes memories of the Susquehanna's SD70Ms and the Sealand container trains they hauled back in the 1990s.

NYS&W WS-1 runs eastbound on the Southern Division past the former passenger depot at Hawthorne, NJ, with freshly repainted SD40-2 #3024. The 3024 received a maroon and silver heritage scheme that was applied to the railroad's alcos in the 1950s.
