This Lego creation is part of the alphabet starfighter project I built with my 4 year old Star Wars obsessed son.

Remember when we called this "the pound key"? I guess I'm old... The alphabet starfighter series continues! I finished the letters and before I take on the number digits I wanted to try some symbols. I did exclamation point, question mark, ampersand and now we have HASHTAG. Elliot had a bold idea for this ship - changing the shape into a rectangle and opening it up as a play feature. The first step I take with these ships is picking a color scheme and laying out the plates. The last time I sorted I saw teal and bright yellow next to each other and knew that I wanted to try them in a ship. I needed another color to do the "work" of connections and structure so I picked white. Laying out the plates was tricky because of the angled vertical sections. I felt the 12x3 wedge plate was the perfect angle, but I would need three of them stacked to properly form the symbol. Luckily Elliot let me take apart his Kessel Run Millennium Falcon 75212 and I also used the 4x9 wedge plates for the horizontal lines. Because of the angled sections, I wasn't able to make a complete rectangular prism as Elliot requested, but the resulting playfeature opening is still quite cool. I definitely scraped the bottom of the barrel on my teal and bright yellow collection. The tribal like pattern was influenced by the Totem character from Us Two Games Monument Valley

If you liked this or any of the other ships in the series be sure to follow along and join the #abcstarfightercontest I am hosting. There are several entries already here and on Instagram, but I'd love to see more! The contest closes on May 9th. Happy creating!

Commissioned in November 1954, the Umhlanga Lighthouse was completed at lightning speed and was built to replace the Bluff lighthouse (which had been on the site since 1869 but had deteriorated to an irreparable degree). Designed by the Office of the Chief Civil Engineer and constructed by the System Harbour Engineer, the tower’s 21-meter height means it can be seen for miles, with a range of light of 24 nautical miles. The lighthouse has a fixed red light that enables ships waiting to anchor in the outer anchorage, to track its position. If the red light can be seen from the ship, it often means that the anchors have dragged and that the ship is too close to shore.

I've been cheating on Flickr with Instagram and I've come to realize something. Here on Flickr we try to post our very best. Instagram is quite different. Some people post their very worst. It's doesn't always show in the pictures but in the hashtags. I've seen beautiful portraits and landscapes that express beautiful emotions. It's when you read the comments that you see a totally different side of the image and the person who captured it. Take a young lady I met the other day. I won't go into her story but she has the ability to capture fantastic images. Images of flowers and skies and fields and sunsets. She also, on occasion, likes to be on the business end of the lens and is able to capture very raw and emotive personal moments of her own journey. What gets to me the most is how she describes the contrasted images. Flowers and skies are #beautiful, #sunny, #bright, #colorful and other wonderful words that bring to us a sense of life, love and joy. She obviously can see the beauty in the world around her but that's where it stops. To describe herself it's #ugly, #fat, #gross #disgusting, #nasty #hate and many more horrible things that let me know that she is a broken little girl who has been dealt a shit hand. My heart breaks for her. This image is for her. I used words that more accurately describe who she is right now. I hope someday words like #redeemed, #honored, #lifted, #exalted, #glorified, #cherished, #treasured, #chosen and #loved will grace her pictures.

At 3:48am Tuesday, 10-minutes after the weather-delayed Polaris Dawn mission was supposed to launch, SpaceX launched another hashtag#Falcon9 rocket, this one carrying Starlink satellites.

It really is quite remarkable that hashtag#SpaceX just had another rocket ready to go, a consolation prize for the large number of people visiting to see the Polaris Dawn launch. Sure, there weren't people on this rocket, but it was still a beautiful launch.

And, it was a memorable launch: This was the 23rd (and unintentionally final) mission for the well-traveled and storied first stage booster 1062. The booster was (somewhat explosively) not recovered. The satellites were successfully delivered to orbit, and while booster recovery is not the primary objective, it was the first launch in quite some time, 267, to be exact, where the booster was lost.

This was the view from Palm Shores, 25-ish miles south of SLC-40, from where the rocket was launched.
