Written in Magic Marker on the duct tape the holds the giant plastic sunflower to this majestic pine tree next to the river falls:
IN LOVING MEMORY OF LARRY STEVENS, 1948-2007, HE LOVED THIS PARK, MY HERO FOREVER
I only hope that when I am gone, someone will care enough to memorialize me in markers, tape, and cheap tacky plastic topiary the same way.
Or, you know, some other way, that's cool too.
Anyway, bye Larry, whoever you were. May your plastic flower never wilt, not be picked up as litter by the town sanitation department.
Man what a fantastic place name.
Reminder to self: write up a blog post about spam / Googlebombing sites flooding the search results for a location that only barely exists.
This really dense, nearly spherical growth seems to be growing out of the top of another tree, maybe 50 or 75 feet above the ground. It almost seems like a parasite plant, like mistletoe or something; the rest of the tree looks nothing like this growth. Weird.

My Home Town
The two anchors for "Old Ironsides" the Warship USS Constitution were made here in 1797. She is the world's oldest commissioned warship afloat.
USS Constitution vs HMS Guerriere on August 19, 1812
The Constitution using heavier broadsides, managed to surprise the British and adding to their astonishment, many of the Guerriere's shots rebounded harmlessly off Constitution's hull. An American sailor reportedly exclaimed "Huzzah! her sides are made of iron!" and Constitution acquired the nickname "Old Ironsides"

You can still make it out here now, but it was even more prominent over the winter when the leaves were gone, and this big dark-green ball was hovering up there.
It's funny, I grew up in this neighborhood, and had spent lots of time wandering around the woods behind our house, but I'd never noticed before this weekend that there was a faint trail going off in a direction I'd never walked before.
With Isaac sitting on my shoulders, we walked down the path to see where it goes. In every other direction I've been, it's all thick woods, swampy in places, but mostly just ordinary woods. So imagine my surprise to find this huge open field out there, largely undisturbed, boxed in by a fairly big neighborhood on one side, a high speed highway on another, and a major commercial roadway strip on the third side.
And we saw an eagle, too! It flew away before I could grab the camera, but it was still fun to see.
As a city boy, Isaac never gets a chance to wander around in the woods and see things like this, while I grew up taking it for granted.
I think I need to spend more time getting lost with him in the woods :-)
It turns out that gorgeous and richly colorful image is a mosaic of tiny tiles. Must have taken forever to put together.
It's supposed to be cute, but I've always found it to be more macabre to have a cute little bunny hanging from the door from hooks & wires like this.
Downhill from the new Target store in Hanover MA is what appears to be an artificial pond. How come? For collecting runoff? Is the store using the water somehow?
Or is it an environmental impact mitigation thing, where the new construction messed up existing water runoff patterns, so they had to provide a way to collect it?
If you ask me, if pocket camcorders weren't invented just so they could be strapped to the back of a remote controlled truck, they should have been.
These trees are supposed to be upright, but the winds we were having, with gusts up to 50mph, were making them sway violently.
At a Jo-Ann's fabrics in Hanover, MA. This row of bolts caught my eye.
Shot taken with my Verizon LG 1.3 megapixel camera phone.
Here's a view up to the chapel with the statue of Cardinal Cushing in the background. Check out that colorful image on the church.
