On 7 January 2026, the Netherlands lies under a thick blanket of snow. Even the centre of Amsterdam — usually just a few degrees warmer — is completely white today. On Madelievenplein, in the heart of the Jordaan, snow has been falling without pause. In the middle of the square stands a neighbourhood Christmas tree. Not a perfect shop-window display, but a true wish tree. Between the snow-covered branches hang cards, notes and ribbons — tied with string, slightly crooked, handwritten and deeply personal. The wishes are small and big at the same time. “My wish is that all wishes, if possible, come true.” And a little further on, with typical Amsterdam bluntness: “One day without weed is a day in the ditch.” Sometimes serious, sometimes ironic. Hopeful, raw, humorous. Exactly like the city itself. Small lights in the tree cast a warm, gentle glow against the winter white. Snowflakes cling to branches, cards and ribbons. The wishes move slowly with the falling snow, as if they are briefly carried along by the silence of the day. Around the square it is unusually quiet. Behind the windows of the surrounding houses, lights are on — small, warm and familiar. We all wish for a white Christmas — but this year the white arrived on 7 January. And perhaps that makes the moment even more special. On this winter day, Amsterdam feels smaller, quieter and almost timeless. And here, on Madelievenplein, snow, wishes and reality come together for just a moment.

Snow falls steadily on Madelievenplein in the heart of the Jordaan, where a neighbourhood wish tree glows softly under a rare blanket of white. Cards and handwritten wishes sway gently among the branches, capturing a quiet, almost timeless winter moment in Amsterdam.
