Miguel Caffarena, owner of the Toro Gordo restaurant and bar on King Street, is going back to his roots this Christmas. ‘I wanted to add a festive flavour to our regular menu and so I’ve decided to include some Spanish seasonal classics that I know and love,’ he explains.

‘We’ll be serving traditional dishes, such as filled aubergine, lamb, beef and pork rolls and bomba de chocolate, as well as a dessert that my mother always used to make at home: fried banana with caramelised chocolate and sugar – that was my favourite.’

Toro Gordo is the ideal Christmas party venue, comfortably accommodating 50-plus people and with private areas for smaller groups, and Miguel is offering a superb value £27 set menu (for 10 diners or more) consisting of three tapas courses – his tapas are larger than usual – and a dessert.

‘It’s so important that our doors are open to all,’ says Lynette Linton. ‘I want the Bush to be a building where everyone, whatever their age background or previous theatrical experience, is at home. Growing up in East London, the 16 year-old me wasn’t all that comfortable in this environment. Even today, when my mum comes to a show, she asks, “What should I wear?” As Artistic Director, I want to change that feeling.’

Having joined the National Youth Theatre, Lynette turned to writing and was mentored by Rikki Beadle-Blair, who programmed her first play, Step, at Theatre Royal Stratford East. ‘Later, I worked with Christopher Hampton, Josie Rourke and Michael Grandage and watching and learning from them was so inspiring.

John Horton founded Horton and Garton in May 2008 with a clear vision in mind. ‘I wanted to create an independent business that provided the best service. There can’t be many businesses which, when a long-serving staff member moves on, invites customers along to the leaving party. That’s not unusual at Locale on Munster Road, and it says everything about the family feel created at the neighbourhood restaurant by Linn Hedblom, the charming Manager, and her team.
