Halo photos on Flickr

A Sun halo is caused by the refraction, reflection, and dispersion of light through ice particles suspended within thin, wispy, high altitude cirrus or cirrostratus clouds. As light passes through these hexagon-shaped ice crystals, it is bent at a 22° angle, creating a circular halo around the Sun.

Rossendale's Panopticon, 'Halo', is an 18m-diameter steel lattice structure supported on a tripod five metres above the ground. From its position on Top o' Slate, an old quarry and former landfill site situated in the hills above Haslingden in the Rossendale Valley, it is clearly visible for miles around.

'Halo' is lit at night using the latest LED technology and after dark glows a sky-blue colour, appearing to hover above the town. This dramatic gateway piece overlooks the A56, welcoming visitors to Pennine Lancashire.

I was out shooting when this fabulous moon halo started showing up. These halos are caused by the moon's light reflecting off ice crystals in the air.

Hallo Halo - das war heute Vormittag das Motto am Hohburkersdorfer Rundblick am Rande der Sächsischen Schweiz. Während die bekannte Aussicht aufgrund des Januar-Winter-Dunstes nicht viel hermachte (selbst der Lilienstein war nicht zu sehen), war der Anblick der Baumgruppe um das Weltkriegsdenkmal viel sehenswerter. Die Wintersonne brach sich an den Eiskristallen der kalten Luft und bildete einen schönen Ring im Winterhimmel.

I had high hopes for my shots from San Francisco, however the weather finally caught up with us and things did not go to plan. We wanted the fog on the roadway but it never got lower than the tower tops of the Golden Gate Bridge.

However, shot from the beach, I love this capture with the halos from the tower lights trying to fight their way through the cloud of fog. The fog was only in this position for a short time prior to the sun rising and I was pleased to capture this unusual perspective of this iconic San Francisco landmark.

My original photo was a spontaneous handheld iPhone shot. I think I did a pretty good job of holding still through the long exposure, but not good enough to capture the details of the clouds and halo around the almost-full moon. The iPhone night mode comes out too light, and the colors get saturated when the exposure is toned down. Still, i liked the Van Gogh-like colors of the sky. Finally, I thought this would be a good subject for the Prisma AI app, and was pleased to see what several did with moon and sky. This was my favorite. Perfect for Sliders Sunday.
