A shot from last summer when travel was a bit more flexible.

DB Cargo 'Shed' 66014 crosses the River Mersey with the 10.34am Southampton Eastern Docks - Halewood Jaguar (6M48) empty car carriers. I opted for the pano crop and some edgier processing for this one, which I thought gave the image more impact.

The Mersey is tidal at this point, and the apartments on the far bank lie in Runcorn. They also happen to lie just beyond the Manchester Ship Canal which runs alongside the river here. Sadly, and hardly a surprise given traffic volumes these days, there were no big ships on it for this shot.

47291 'Port of Felixstowe' passes Huntsworth with 6B97, 1210 Tavistock Junction to Gloucester New Yard Speedlink service.

Traffic carried includes on OCA open wagon conveying bricks from Plymouth to Grangemouth, china clay from Cornwall to Cliffe Vale and empty car carriers returning from Exeter to Halewood.

This was the second wagonload freight to head north in a couple of hours: previously 6M29, the 1400 from Taunton to Warrington had conveyed empty fertiliser wagons, cider from Taunton together with empty coal hoppers and oil tanks.

In addition, an hour earlier a train of empty fuel tanks from Heathfield in Devon to Briton Ferry had passed, as well as two mail trains.

The architecture might be of Great Western heritage, but there's little hiding the elegant art-deco design of those awning lamps on Leamington Spa station.

If only the Shed could boast such fine design aesthetics - but at least it was supporting Britain's export drive by hauling Land Rover cars manufactured on Merseyside, down to the docks for shipment overseas.

The train is the 11.31am Halewood (Jaguar Land Rover) - Southampton Eastern Docks (6O42), seen here making an on-time appearance off the Coventry line, and hauled by DB Cargo unit 66030.

It seems trite to describe a day of railway photography as 'perfect', but, through rose-tinted spectacles, 25 years later it looks like a pretty good day.

The sun shone all day and unusually, I don't have any memories of the 'shot I just missed' or 'if only I had been here rather than there', which are so common after a day's linesiding.

Illustrating the variety of this section of the WCML at the time, I shot the following locomotive classes: 37/ 43/ 47/ 56/ 60/ 86/ 87/ 90/ 92, together with a sprinkling of EMU & DMUs.

In 2023 the area is still one of the busiest in the UK, but the removal of every day locomotive haulage, the standardisation of motive power, the virtual eradication of coal mining and the removal of traditional signal boxes has taken away some of the interest.

Nearing journeys end working the annual Belmond British Pullman trip to Liverpool for the Grand National, 67005 'Queen's Messenger' passes Halewood working 1Z39 London Victoria to Liverpool South Parkway, Pullman livery 67024 on the rear. 15/4/23

47226 + 47241 'Halewood Silver Jubilee 1988' in variations of Railfreight Distribution livery pass Bourton on 21/11/96 with 6M03 08.15 Swindon-Longbridge. The train (upto 3 a day) conveyed car body panels from Rover's Swindon plant to its main factory at Longbridge using purpose built 'cube' wagons.

66094 crosses Canute Road in Southampton with the 2236 Halewood to Eastern Docks running 60 mins late.

It’s about 0600 and there is a light mist in the air which makes for a very atmospheric picture.

This ungated crossing is soon to loose its uniqueness.

66135 crosses Canute Road in Southampton as it travels light engine from Southampton Eastern Docks back to Eastleigh after working the 1131 from Halewood with a train load of Jaguars. The lack of barriers on a major road in a large city is somewhat unusual, dare I say unique and provides a wicked photo opportunity. On this occasion I had literally pulled up in my car on the way back from Antwerp with the crossing lights flashing. I grabbed my phone and bagged what I think is a really interesting shot, I hope you agree.

In dramatic lighting, the 6M48 10.32 Southampton Eastern Docks to Halewood service consists of empty car carriers that are heading back to Merseyside to be re-filled with Jaguar cars for export.

Heavy rain in the previous couple of weeks has flooded the area, the usual course of the River Cherwell is on the right edge of the image, two thirds of the way up.

GBRf 'Shed' no. 66762 leans to the curve passing Nuneaton with the 9.28am Dagenham Dock - Garston Car Terminal (6X43), and its load of vehicle carriers plus cars.

This was one of the two out-and-back trains that worked between these two points on the day - the outbounds to Garston with a timed trainload of 1200 tonnes, and the returns to Dagenham with a load 950 tonnes (presumably just the empty carriers).

Trains carrying cars to Southampton Dock from Jaguar / Land Rover's Halewood plant for export to the US and Far East seem to be pretty thin on the ground these days, currently running at around one or two per week.

May have been a bit of slider work for artistic effect.....

Comments off for this one, thanks.

6M48 Southampton-Halewood empty cars

Curving through Rugeley Trent Valley, Climate 66004 leads 6M48 Southampton Eastern Docks to Halewood Jaguar Cars.

Nine minutes later and LSL 87002 'Royal Sovereign' on a matching rake of Mk1 Carmine & Cream stock rushes through on the up fast with the 10.12 Liverpool Lime Street - Wembley Central Footex.

Immaculate two-tone Green LSL 47805 'Roger Hosking MA' was attached to the rear.

* Of note: this appears to be the original catenary erected here for the opening of the Crewe - Liverpool electrification, January 1st 1962.

* This move required a reversal at Crewe after DB refused to take the stock via the Low Level line after unchecked lineside vegetation scratched the Pullman stock two years ago.

6M48 Southampton Docks - Halewood Jaguar at Kings Sutton, seems strange to see an empty train coming from the Docks...

The first of two Merseyside Footex's for the Liverpool v Newcastle Cup Final at Wembley is captured emerging from under the Expressway at Halewood behind 86259 'Les Ross'.

86401 'Mons Meg' was attached at the rear and credit goes to WCRC for utilising a full rake of Blue Grey MK2's, creating a very smart train.

37191 and 37258 drag a dead 47060 'Halewood Silver Jubilee 1988' away from its train at Alexandra Dock Junction.

47060 had been working 6B19, the 0940 Exeter Riverside to Alexandra Dock Junction but had failed enroute. 37191 and 37258 had recovered the train and took it to its destination, albeit arriving several hours late.

Although the Speedlink wagonload network had been discontinued 3 years before, this working illustrates the variety of traffic conveyed by Railfreight Distribution's Contract Services network.

Despite this failure, 47060 survived into Freightliner (1995) ownership. Although withdrawn from service in 1999, the locomotive was subsequently rebuilt as 57008. In 2018 57008 still existed but was stored out of use.

DBC 90039 is pictured leading the second of the day's Footex workings from Liverpool with this working being 1Z22 from Liverpool South Parkway to Wembley Central. 67006 was on the rear of the train having worked the ECS from Crewe earlier in the day.

It was a somewhat nervous wait for this working as there were more and more blue gaps appearing in the clouds by the time this was due to pass, but there was still rather a lot of cloud cover around; thankfully the sun found a gap just as it was approaching! Incidentally this is the first time I have photted 90039 in its striking Backbone livery, although I have (strangely enough!) photted this particularly livery on a DB Vectron before!
