The tournament’s number five seed Simona Halep of Romania during quarterfinal action against the number one seed, Serena Williams of the United States in the 2016 US Open in Arthur Ashe Stadium at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Corona Park in the Corona neighborhood of the New York City borough of Queens.
Williams won in three sets 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 to advance to the semifinals.

Simona Halep (born on 27 September 1991) is a Romanian professional tennis player. She won the award WTA's Most Improved Player Of The Year for 2013.
After the China Open (October 2017) she is ranked as the new number 1 in the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) hierarchy.
Simona Halep is the 25th WTA World leader.
