Impending hail storm. Looking north from Canada de Pala trail, Joseph D. Grant county park, San Jose, Calif., Jan. 31, 2016.

Run, shutterbug, run!

Not the sharpest shot, but I love how the hail pounded the calm water in this shot. I got completely soaked taking it, but it was worth the effort!

Across the lane from Hailes Abbey in Gloucestershire is Hailes Church, a small country chapel that predates its more famous neighbour by a half-century. The small Norman church stands on the edge of a farm field, directly opposite the ruins of the Cistercian abbey. Hailes Church was begun around 1135 and is famous for its wonderful collection of medieval wall paintings.

After months without rain, a violent hailstorm over the hills of Soave, Veneto, Northern Italy. Looking toward the Illasi valley from Castelcerino.

Five minutes later, we were engulfed with hailstones the size of golfballs, but had the time to seek cover.

Founded in 1246 by the Earl of Cornwall, Hailes Abbey is set amid delightful Cotswold countryside. Once the centre of monastic life, the tranquil ruins are now the perfect place to relax and enjoy a picnic in a unique historic setting. Visit the new museum to discover the treasures of Hailes, uncovering stories of the monks who lived and worshipped at the abbey for nearly three centuries.

We were treated to a surprise hail shower yesterday afternoon, very noisy, small pellets, lasted over 15 minutes. Georgina watched with me from the patio door, it was very exciting :)

yes, that is what they were doing... :-)

Is mother nature mad at us? I think so.

Madre natura è arrabbiato con noi? Credo di sì.

Got lucky as the sun lined up with a window frame at Hailes Castle. 3 exposure blended in Photomatix

Godspeed Gérard

I join the flickr community in mourning the passing of our dear friend Gérard who lost his life to cancer this July.

RIP Gérard

In the gentle rain of 28 July 2019 while visiting Katmai National Park in Alaska, this big guy showed up. Instantly, we knew he was the dominate male in our area due to his size (standing around 7’ tall) and numerous, notable scars.

As he passe through, he stopped and grabbed the branches above him and started marking his territory buy rubbing the leaves around his eyes.

While editing this shot, I wondered if maybe the ancient romans noted this behavior of such a magnificent beast, and designed the now famous coronet of its rulers.

For me, this shot was an absolute Hail-Mary.

I was on the Gold Coast for a sporting event, but as always, I take my camera with me in hope of doing some photography. Opportunities were extremely limited, and I have little to no knowledge of the area. Armed with Google Maps and only a couple of hours up my sleeve, I randomly selected 2 coastal spots to take photos of the Surfers Paradise city skyline, the second of which was Currumbin Rock. I did take some telephoto shot of the city, but I thought I'd have a crack at getting a photo of the rock before I left. Despite being only an hour after sunset, it was extremely dark, the rock barely visible to the naked eye. Even worse through the camera lens. All I could see was a black screen, even at wide open aperture and ISO set to the max. I took a stab in the dark at the focal range, set the aperture really small and took 4 x 135sec exposures. The first was very nearly in focus, so I tweaked the focus manually a few times, each one better than the last. This was the final result. Not perfectly in focus, but with a plane to catch and limited visibility, the result is much better than expected.

I took this shot yesterday with a freezing temperature and some hail storms.

Not my greatest image if im honest but thought id share.

Having to use a fast shutter to freeze the hail, kind of renders the image useless when the backlighting is so bright. Ive had to push this image 2 full stops out of the dark to reveal the foreground, which I'm not to happy about as it them becomes somewhat noisy.
