“Hacking” is the term used to describe non-competitive horse riding that’s undertaken outside of the arena, usually on the roads or bridleways. Most horse riders who go on a “hack” will do so for pleasure, but hacking is also a great opportunity to undertake training and fitness work. Riders will usually choose to ride on bridleways where possible, but often they’ll have to ride on the road to reach them.
This particular bridalway leads into Bestwood Country Park where pathways are clearly marked so dog walkers are aware where horses are likely to be…it’s a beautiful place to walk with many paths and your walk can be as short as 20 minutes or half a day to walk all around the whole place,…Sue :)

This is a favourite area of mine to walk in the autumn as the deciduous tree's take on some great colours before they start to drop their leaves.The low light over the top of Lowdale still lights the tree tops on the hillside.A couple of the later photo's from here had better colour in the sky but i liked the composition of this one better

Galgos
The Spanish greyhound is thought by some popular writers to have descended from Egyptian dogs brought to the Iberian Peninsula by the Phoenicians nearly 3,000 years ago. However the existence of the Celtic vertragus in Roman Iberia 2,000 years ago, as described by Arrian and Martial, suggests that it and its possible descendant the Galgo, may more likely be of Western European type in origin. After it was established in Spain, it is thought to have been cross-bred centuries later with the Sloughi brought from North Africa by the Moors. Some writers suggest that this breed may be ancestral to the English Greyhound.
The Galgo name is probably derived from the Latin Canis Gallicus or 'Dog from Gaul'. The Spanish word for all kinds of Greyhounds — including the Galgo — is lebrel, which means 'harrier' or 'dog for chasing hares', since liebre is Spanish for 'hare'. The same derivative is seen in the Italian levriero and the French lévrier.
Arrian described his personal experience in Spain. His description of hare hunting is very similar to that used with the Galgo nowadays in Spain, adding that it was a general Celtic tradition not related to social class. He indicated that there were not only smooth-haired types of the vertragus but also rough-coated ones.
There is little evidence for mention of the Galgo or its antecedent in the first centuries of the Middle Ages, but it appeared to have survived and flourished in the second half of the period.
In the 9th and 10th centuries, coinciding with the Reconquista, great spaces in Castile were colonised resulting in Christian military repossession of the Iberian Peninsula from Muslim control. This open land introduced a new mode of hunting with dogs: while the North of Spain is mountainous, the regions progressively recovered were flat, open areas full of small animals like hares, which provided the Galgo a useful opportunity for hunting. At that time it was considered a noble dog, and was kept mainly by the aristocracy of both the Christian and the Muslim kingdoms in which Spanish territory was still divided. It is likely that the Galgo and the Sloughi (perhaps also Saluki) were interbred during this period.
The Galgo appears to have developed first in the Castillian plains, both in the north (Valladolid, Zamora, Ávila Salamanca, Segovia, Soria, Burgos and Palencia) and the south (Toledo, Cuenca, Guadalajara, Madrid and Ciudad Real) of Castilla. And, afterwards, in more southern territories: La Mancha and Andalusia. It became the typical dog type of the Spanish interior, while the bloodhound plays the same role in the coast regions.
The Galgo appears not only in hunting books but also in common Spanish expressions, as well as in literature. The most famous reference is perhaps the one contained in the opening sentence of Don Quixote de La Mancha: "In a village of La Mancha, the name of which I have no desire to call to mind, there lived not long since one of those gentlemen that keep a lance in the lance-rack, an old buckler, a lean hack, and a galgo for coursing."
Animal cruelty concerns
There are many reports of Galgos being treated cruelly by their hunters and breeders in Spain. An estimated 50,000 to 100,000 Galgos and Podencos are killed, often brutally, each year by their hunters, also known as galgueros.

Arriving at the west end of the BN's yard, 103 and its homely hack cooled their wheels while SD9 6137 sorted out cars , probably including the outbound train for Colorado & Wyoming to take back to Sunrise ore mine. The BN's Orin line had only been recently completed and there are signs of the beginnings of construction to convert the CB&Q yard into one that would accomodate the coal trains. The whole yard can be seen in this shot, but beyond the Hwy26 overpass in the far distance is the beginning of the new yard with tracks of adequate length. Above the fourth car behind the BN6137, hiding behind the budding cottonwoods, can be seen the CB&Q's two story depot (with the second floor once used for living quarters for the operator/agent.) It was neatly kept in white side shingles with green trim. There had been talk of saving the old depot, but one night a mysterious fire eliminated that possibility. The wooden stairway in the foreground reached a platform on my left where a switchman could pass signals, between the rest of the crew working the lead and the engineer around a left hand curve behind me.
I took a blade to my JBL headphones today so that the plug would fit in the iPhone. Amazingly it worked.

SOO 6061, CP 5012 and CP 6243 race to River Junction (Here at the extremely undershot town of Dakota) to make me very angry and not go down the ICE in good light with a loaded dresser ballast train. Reno, you would have been so beautiful...

Two down, one to go. The second Portal North Bridge Arch ducks under three lift bridges on the Hackensack River in Kearny for installation upstream. The arches are constructed in the Port of Coeymans, NY and are floated down the Hudson and Hackensack rivers. While transport down the Hudson is a fairly mundane journey, the trek up the Hackensack River requires maneuvering through the seven moveable bridges within a six mile stretch for delivery to the construction site. The three bridges pictured are PATH's Hack Bridge, Conrail's Hack Bridge, and the Route 7 Wittpenn Bridge.

Originally I was going to call this one "In case of fire: Git commit. Git push. Git out" -- true geeks will get that.
Hack, buggy, van.....whatever tickles your fancy. Providence and Worcester train CT-1 is about to tack the former NYC caboose on the hind end of their train in Wethersfield, CT before heading South back to Middletown. CSO 21226 was on loan to the P&W for making the shove over the swing bridge between Middletown and Portland, and sometimes the crew would take it for a ride elsewhere. Not too often theirs a hack in front AND behind the camera.
