In the early 90s, I was smitten by all things hacker. So I wrote the Hacker's Manifesto down from a book, into Photoshop 2 (I think). It was saved as a QuickDraw32 file that even Apple don't recognize no more. I used good old GraphicConverter to open it and resave as PNG.
Since I first read it, I've always carried parts of The Mentor's credo within. Sure, it may be simplistic, but the tenets still stand firm. I Believe.
My reason for posting this old image is partly nostalgia, but mostly inspired by the fact that the powers that be STILL don't understand what a hacker is. Case in point: Swedish police just busted a hackerspace in nearby Malmö (claiming it was a collateral to another bust, but IT cops were present). The hackerspace, Forskningsavdelningen(The Research Department), had all their computers confiscated, along with blank keys and such, and the police have now claimed that Forskningsavdelningen was "preparing to commit grand theft," referring to their locksmithing tools. ANYONE who's EVER read hacker history knows that this has been a part of hacker culture since the days of TMRC. Of course, I cannot know if Forskningsavdelningen had any illegalities of any magnitude going on, but i still think the blatant ignorance of the powers that be is a crime in itself.
The end result will probably be nothing, except a loss of a bunch of probably-not-top-of-the-line computers and a slight disruption of operations.
In September 2015, Het Entrepot will place several young volunteers in a Bruges cellar where they will spend four days hacking into their home town’s DNA and thrashing out their dreams for Bruges. And all this under the watchful eyes of the outside world as cameras record the entire 4-day project.
They will brainstorm with each other but also have the help of various experts on the subject. Each day will close with an evening programme for the public. You are welcome to join in the debate on their ideas.

We needed a stable power supply for the Camera that would last 24 hours so we put this ugly hack together. It worked beautifully.
We had a bonanza of great items to investigate in the latest "Kid Hack Session". There was a German-made cuckoo clock, an old transistor radio, printers, pinball game and a batmobile that was held together by some superior alien technology. Good times in the makerspace.
From 8-10 May, 2015, Waag Society and The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision hosted the first of six Europeana Space hackathons. This was the main objective: come up with appealing ideas and applications to bring the rich archive of digitized European cultural heritage to the public.
The Europeana Space Project seeks prove that digitized cultural heritage material can be used in creative ways, and new business and sustainability models can be developed around these innovations.
