Devetashka - the Bulgarian Cave with 70,000 Years of Human Habitation

Devetashka cave is an enormous cave in Bulgaria, which has provided shelter for groups of humans since the late Paleolithic era, and continuously for tens of thousands of years since then. Now abandoned by humans, it remains a site of national and international significance and is home to some 30,000 bats.

Devetashka cave, which is known as Devetàshka peshterà in Bulgaria, is located roughly 18 kilometres north of Lovech, near the village of Devetaki. It is a karst cave formed from the dissolution of soluble rocks and characterized by sinkholes, caves, and underground drainage systems.

The cave itself is immense, measuring approximately 2 kilometres in length and with a huge entrance ‘hall’ measuring 60 metres in height. In places the ceiling is 100 metres above the ground and there are seven huge holes through which daylight illuminates the vast interior. It is these holes that earned the cave the name Maarata or Oknata ("the eyes").

About 200 meters from the entrance, the cave separates into two branches. On the left side, a small river runs along it, forming miniature lakes and waterfalls, passing through the main hall and eventually flowing into the Osam River. The right side is warm and dry and contains several chambers, ending with a round hall, known as the Altar. Beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, rivulets, majestic natural domes and arches can be found within the enormous cave and one can see why various human populations would have chosen Devetashka as their home.

Devetashka Cave was rediscovered by a Bulgarian scientist in 1921 but was not fully excavated until the 1950s when the intention was to transform the cave into a giant warehouse. Studies revealed that it has been inhabited almost continuously since the late Paleolithic era. The earliest traces of human presence date back to the middle of the Early Stone Age around 70,000 years ago. The Devetashka cave also contained one of the richest sources of cultural artifacts from the Neolithic (6th millennium - 4th millennium B C).

In June, 1996, Devetashka Cave was declared a natural landmark. The cave is probably best known for its part in the action movie ‘The Expendables 2’, filmed in 2011, in which Sylvester Stallone crash lands a plane into Jean Claude Van Damme’s subterranean lair.

The town of Camara de Lobos, Madeira, slopes right on down to its harbor in Churchill Bay on the Atlantic Ocean. The combination of thick fog or clouds and sunshine was not so unusual during our time on the island. And with its volcanic rock, the island has lots of steep hills, cliffs and precipices jutting up all along its coastline. Houses and fields or vineyards are situated on this rough terrain almost as if nature is no impediment at all to human habitation and cultivation. [P1090064_lr_2000]

View of the Moskva River and embankments of the capital during sunset. Russia.

It is impossible to imagine the capital of Russia without the Moskva River with beautiful embankments, magnificent monasteries and picturesque parks located on its banks.

A river in honor of a city or a city in honor of a river?

This issue is still being discussed today, but most historians are convinced that it was the river, not the city, that got its name first. One of the theories claims that the word "Moscow" itself is Finnish, and has nothing to do with Russian speech. Consequently, the river got its name during the habitation of Finnish tribes on its banks. "Mosk" in translation means "bear", and "wa" - "water". Another popular version - in the ancient Slavic name of the Mosva River means damp or marshy area.

Matata Caves are located in the town of Meschers-sur-Gironde, about ten kilometers from Royan, Charente-Maritime. Near the caves of Regulus, they share many characteristics, they are a leading attraction.

The caves of Matata is a set of cave dwellings furnished in natural cavities over the centuries. Carved into powerful limestone cliffs overlooking the Gironde estuary of almost thirty meters, they are emblematic of the department of Charente-Maritime. Arranged on two floors, they form a network of cells that are accessed by corridors and stairs.

In the eighth century, Saracens dug, according to tradition, silos in terraces, still visible and which later served to hide the salt smuggling in order not to pay tax to the salt tax.

Saintongeais of traditional habitats have been restored, illustrating, models, furniture and support vessels, and the lives of those who have lived in these caves for centuries. One room has been converted into a small museum where fossils are presented as well as aquariums, where evolving animal species typical of the Gironde estuary (including sturgeon, which has long given the Gironde caviar).

Legend

Jean Ancelin, Charlotte de la Trémoille steward, have found refuge in the caves of Meschers after poisoning the prince Henri de Bourbon-Condé, the husband of Charlotte. There would be lived as a hermit for many years. One day, someone, having discovered, asked him his name, caught by surprised, he would have answered "Matuta" construed as a quote from the Latin poem "Matuta, Matutina" extolling the beauties of the goddess Aurora. The name would have become, by deformation: "Matata". The story of "Matata", the mysterious recluse, ends in a drama became suspect in the eyes of the people who take him as a sorcerer, he was immured alive in his cave.

Three Pelicans with a Mugger crocodile for company. These birds are difficult to differentiate from other pelicans in the region except for the unmistakable spots on the upper mandible from which they derive their name. The lack of bright colours and the greyer plumage are distinctive. A strange thing is that these birds tend to nest close to human habitations and some villages with nesting colonies have become popular tourist attractions. Though the numbers of these birds have declined and many populations in Southeast Asia are now extinct, the populations in southern India are thought to be on the rise enabling their status to be changed from vulnerable to near threatened in the 2007.

Great White Egret - Ardea Alba

The great egret is generally a very successful species with a large and expanding range, occurring worldwide in temperate and tropical habitats. It is ubiquitous across the Sun Belt of the United States and in the Neotropics. In North America, large numbers of great egrets were killed around the end of the 19th century so that their plumes could be used to decorate hats. Numbers have since recovered as a result of conservation measures. Its range has expanded as far north as southern Canada. However, in some parts of the southern United States, its numbers have declined due to habitat loss, particularly wetland degradation through drainage, grazing, clearing, burning, increased salinity, groundwater extraction and invasion by exotic plants. Nevertheless, the species adapts well to human habitation and can be readily seen near wetlands and bodies of water in urban and suburban areas.

The great egret is partially migratory, with northern hemisphere birds moving south from areas with colder winters. It is one of the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) applies.

In 1953, the great egret in flight was chosen as the symbol of the National Audubon Society, which was formed in part to prevent the killing of birds for their feathers.

On 22 May 2012, a pair of great egrets was announced to be nesting in the UK for the first time at the Shapwick Heath nature reserve in Somerset. The species is a rare visitor to the UK and Ben Aviss of the BBC stated that the news could mean the UK's first great egret colony is established. The following week, Kevin Anderson of Natural England confirmed a great egret chick had hatched, making it a new breeding bird record for the UK. In 2017, seven nests in Somerset fledged 17 young, and a second breeding site was announced at Holkham National Nature Reserve in Norfolk where a pair fledged three young.

In 2018, a pair of great egrets nested in Finland for the first time, raising four young in a grey heron colony in Porvoo.

The house sparrow (Passer domesticus) is a bird of the sparrow family Passeridae, found in most parts of the world. It is a small bird that has a typical length of 16 cm (6.3 in) and a mass of 24–39.5 g (0.85–1.39 oz). Females and young birds are coloured pale brown and grey, and males have brighter black, white, and brown markings. One of about 25 species in the genus Passer, the house sparrow is native to most of Europe, the Mediterranean Basin, and a large part of Asia. Its intentional or accidental introductions to many regions, including parts of Australasia, Africa, and the Americas, make it the most widely distributed wild bird.

The house sparrow is strongly associated with human habitation, and can live in urban or rural settings. Though found in widely varied habitats and climates, it typically avoids extensive woodlands, grasslands, polar regions, and hot, dry deserts far away from human development. For sustenance, the house sparrow routinely feeds at home and public bird feeding stations, but naturally feeds on the seeds of grains, flowering plants and weeds. However, it is an opportunistic, omnivorous eater, and commonly catches insects, their larvae, caterpillars, invertebrates and many other natural foods.

Because of its numbers, ubiquity, and association with human settlements, the house sparrow is culturally prominent. It is extensively, and usually unsuccessfully, persecuted as an agricultural pest. It has also often been kept as a pet, as well as being a food item and a symbol of lust, sexual potency, commonness, and vulgarity. Though it is widespread and abundant, its numbers have declined in some areas. The animal's conservation status is listed as least concern on the IUCN Red List

Before the medieval period mermaids were seen by many cultures around the world as terrifying, scary beings. Sailors originally described them as a complete fish body with a human or monster heads until eventually they evolved into beautiful sirens luring men to their doom. Some people have linked the mysterious Oarfish to these legends which adds to the overall fascination with mermaids into the 21st century.

Taken in Mana Pools N.P. near the Zambezi River on the border of Zimbabwe.

A large wading bird native to sub-Saharan Africa. It breeds in both wet and arid habitats, often near human habitation, especially landfill sites. It is sometimes called the "undertaker bird" due to its shape from behind: cloak-like wings and back, skinny white legs.

It has the largest wingspan of any land bird, with an average of 2.6 metres and some recorded examples of up to 3.2 metres.

The marabou stork is a frequent scavenger, and the naked head and long neck are adaptations to this livelihood, as it is with the vultures with which the stork often feeds.
