Este arrecife que se puede observar desde el mirador de las sirenas, junto al faro de Cabo de Gata, es una de las vistas más emblemáticas y fotografiadas del Parque. Está situado en el punto geográfico exacto del cabo de Gata, por tanto es la parte más oriental del sur de España. Seguramente el lugar debe su nombre a la presencia de focas monje que habitaban este arrecife y que los antiguos navegantes podían confundir con sirenas, actualmente ya no hay presencia de estos mamíferos en la costa de Cabo de Gata.
Las formaciones del arrecife que se elevan por encima del nivel del agua son antiguas chimeneas volcánicas, y que deben su color oscuro al material volcado por ellas. Desde lo alto del mirador se pueden observar los escarpados acantilados de la zona y en el fondo, el agua que rodea el arrecife, es como un cristal que nos permite observar el mosaico del fondo marino coloreando el mar de turquesas, verdes y todas las tonalidades de azul.

La parte donde antes vivía el dueño o fundador del cortijo están abandonadas sobre todo en la Campiña sin arboles y apenas agua. Las sucesiones de generaciones han dejado libre una nave donde se guardan los aperos. En la Subbética un terreno más abrigado, los cortijos conservan la casa como patrimonio, pues la temperatura y el agua hacen más agradable la habitabilidad y se utilizan menos medios mecánicos. A proximité de Tournai, le village de Willemeau (649 habitants) a été fréquemment touché par d’importantes inondations. Afin de résoudre ce problème, il était devenu urgent de construire deux ouvrages de rétention des eaux sur le Ruisseau de la Place de Taintignies (bassin versant de 503 hectares), affluent du Ruisseau de Barges.
Après une étude hydrologique approfondie, en lieu et place du traditionnel bassin d’orage en béton, le Service public de Wallonie et la Province de Hainaut ont opté pour la mise en oeuvre d’une solution innovante et écologique : la zone d’immersion temporaire [ZIT].
La ZIT est constituée d’une digue en terre placée sur le cours d’eau qui permet la retenue des eaux sur des terrains naturels ou semi-naturels lors de périodes caractérisées par une pluviométrie abondante.
Ces aménagements s’inscrivent dans une démarche de développement durable. Ainsi la gestion des terres d’excavation a été optimisée dans un souci de réduction de l’empreinte écologique/carbone du chantier. Au strict bénéfice du développement de la nature, le chantier s’est même offert une pause le temps de laisser nicher un oiseau protégé, l’avocette élégante !
