Day 1, No. 1.

Hi! HRW.

www.amnesty.org.uk/deadly-force-police-violence-usa

Hundreds of men and women are killed by police every year across the United States. No-one knows exactly how many because the authorities do not count how many lives are lost.

From what information we do have, it seems that African American men are impacted the most by police use of lethal force. But many African American women have also died at the hands of the police.

All 50 US states and the District of Columbia fail to comply with international standards on police use of lethal force. Thirteen states also fail to meet the lower standards set by US constitutional law on the use of lethal force by law enforcement officers, while nine states and the District of Columbia have no laws at all on the use of lethal force – including Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Ohio, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

www.hrw.org/world-report/2019/country-chapters/united-states

The United States continued to move backward on human rights at home and abroad in the second year of President Donald Trump’s administration. With Trump’s Republican party controlling the legislative branch in 2018, his administration and Congress were able to pass laws, implement regulations, and carry out policies that violate or undermine human rights.

Racial disparities permeate every part of the US criminal justice system. Black people are 13 percent of the population but close to 40 percent of those in prisons. They are incarcerated at more than five times the rate of white people. Black people use illegal drugs at similar rates to white people, but suffer drug arrests at significantly higher rates.

mappingpoliceviolence.org/

Black people were 24% of those killed despite being only 13% of the population.

There were only 27 days in 2019 where police did not kill someone.

hrw & happy Easter !

"They said knowledge is a flame, so we lit the lamp that illuminates what injustice has darkened around us."

Students in besieged Eastern Ghouta practice writing in a classroom. There have been over 4,000 attacks on schools in a four year span (Save the Children), and one in three schools are closed due to destruction, use for military purposes, or to shelter displaced people (HRW). Enrollment rates are as low as six percent in territories which face indiscriminate air strikes (Save the Children). As an act of defiance, many schools have been moved to underground locations, to enlighten the generation that will rebuild Syrian society from the ground up.

Happy April Polaroid Week!

Day 1

For this Polaroid Week here's a little experimental abstract study I've been playing with the last few weeks while still cooped up at home.

HRW everyone!

Polaroid Land 195

multiple exposures & film manipulation

The braces have been put on the top teeth. Her orthodontist has her using the Damon System Braces which don't use elastics, instead the wire is held in place by little "doors" on the brackets that open and close (don't ask me, I've only a vague understanding of it - if you're that curious, just Google the Damon System ;-)).

The bits of color are only leftover from the braces being put on, it's not colored elastics like many other braces have. On the other hand, these supposedly work faster and better (and less frequently requiring extractions), so it's a pretty easy trade off. ;-)

Rowan's ballet costume - the first of the three for the recital. She had a boatload of things to carry in to the auditorium - water, two other costumes, all the associated shoes, extra make up (oy, the make up!), extra tights... the poor child nearly fell over once we handed it all back to her.

Thank goodness I took this - I even said as I did, "if all else fails, at least I have one self portrait for today!" And sure enough, it was the only one of the day.

We were attending a function* in Plymouth in the evening, but figured we'd head out a bit early to visit the touristy things. It was supposed to be really hot and humid, but luckily right on the coast here it was pretty cool (though still quite humid - which is kind of annoying, when it's cool but you're still sweating!).

Rowan had been here on a class field tirp a few years ago, so she'd seen everything. I'd seen Plymouth Rock once on a side trip with the staff from the camp I was a counselor out which wasn't too far from here, but hadn't checked out anything else in the area. Gary had never been.

It actually is pretty nice, we're determined to come back when we have more time, better weather, and better attire for exploring the beach front!

*The function (I didn't want to get this all mixed up in the day's description, because it's kind of a long winded one - imagine that). We were visiting the Massachusetts Grand Assembly of the International Order of Rainbow for Girls. Lots of people have never heard of the Rainbow Girls, but it's not a cult, or a convent, or a lesbian organization - all theories I've heard mentioned! - just a service organization for girls associated with the Masons... I was a member for several years, and Rowan will be eligible for membership in November, so we went down so she could get an idea of what Rainbow is about. It's kind of hard to explain sometimes, so it was an introduction for her and Gary. We've been in contact with a local Assembly, and she visited with them a few times for open events (Rainbow meetings are only open to members and those afifliated with the organization somehow most of the time), but this was a new level.

But wow, what a long night. It started at 5 with some fun events, there was a break, the formal meeting began at 6:30, and we left at 10pm. They'd invited us to visit with the assembly afterwards for pizza and fun back at the hotel (most Assemblies stay at a hotel near the convention center where Grand Assembly is held rather than commute since it's a weekend-long event), but we were already tired and had a 1.5 hour dirve ahead of us, so we opted out and home we headed...

Where we discovered that it was just as foggy in Worcester as in Plymouth!

The more far-flung tables of the teahouse take advantage of the shade provided by Valens's Aqueduct.

Arriva the Shires Mercedes-Benz Tourismo 7215 (BV20 HRW) is seen here at Victoria on service 757 to Luton Airport.

Each year at 4:50 pm (the exact time she was born) on Rowan's birthday, we take a photo. This year, I wasn't with them, so Gary took it. Outside. When it's dark. Under horrible orange lights outside the convenience store.

So, the color is all icky, but it's still a cute reminder of Rowan at 9:

* The school uniform.

* The shoes she loves to death.

* The hair style of choice (a pony tail only halfway through the holder the last time around)

* The poses (thank goodness the child goes to bed before 8pm, she'd be addicted to America's Next Top Model just at the whole concept of being able to pose all day long for money!)

Ah, to be nine again...

Built by Suleiman the Magnificent in memory of his favorite son, this mosque was completed in 1548 CE.

This WPA building has doubled as "Berlin Airport" in at least one Indiana Jones film.
