The best time to photograph photographers is where there are rallies. I wonder if it may be too hot to keep a beard in Hong Kong. Good posture, nice shirt.

I kept on seeing this boat from my apartment up above peering down and now I have spotted the same boat at eye level.
The word 海鮮 in Chinese means seafood, but it is in fact made up with two characters: 海 is sea and 鮮 is fresh. Thus you can see that seafood according to the Chinese must be eaten fresh. This is why when you go to Chinese restaurants you will see a lot of fish tanks. Simply put, dead seafood is nasty.
I have no idea what is in its nets but those look like squids to me. Oh yummy!

Here are those fishermen seen earlier in the stream [1]. And it appears that they are in fact not one man but two women. They sailed all the way towards me so I took a series of videos of them—to be posted. Soundtrack is a big issue for videography. I am so sick of writing music just to go with these tracks. But if I don’t write them they become very boring to watch…
This is a bit of an extreme crop—lens not long enough. If I photograph enough of these I will go get a 100-400 sooner or later.

Covered in a full wet suit with a snorkel, a swim ring around his waist and a string which is attached to a styrofoam box for storage, a fisherman in Hong Kong swam near the surface of Tolo Harbour to catch crabs.

I met Billy Clarke rather randomly—on Instagram.
Most people use social media as an extension of their existing real life contacts, I on the other hand do things in reverse. I find interesting people on social media and then proceed to make human contacts.
Although I have been on Flickr since 2006, I joined only recently in 2012 shortly after moving to Hong Kong. I discovered that Instagram is a great way to know what’s going on about any place quickly and so I think that I found Billy through the #HK tag.
Billy, who works as a writer for many publications in Hong Kong, has now become my eyes-and-years of Hong Kong. It is he who alerted me about USS Peleliu’s arrival at the Harbour City [1]. It was he who gave me the details about the rubber duck [2]. And it was he who told me about the M+ Inflatable sculptures [3].
Every photographer needs a source of good materials, and this 30yo writer in Hong Kong has more than enough to offer. Besides being a good trusty human database, he writes great articles on his blog and has a great sense of humor. Trust that I would be adventuring with him more in the future—stay tuned.

Every time I go to Wu Kai Sha, I see an old man with long flowing silver beard picking stones at the beach.
After some research, it turns out that he has been manually organising the stones on the beach for years voluntarily after noting that quite a number of people swim at the public beach which is not looked after by government officials.
And so day and night, he comes to the beach to sort the stones out into neatly organised piles so that other people can enjoy the beach.
What an incredible story — I was planning to shoot some documentary here perhaps but the locals told me that his story is quite well known and has been covered by televisions in Hong Kong already — though I have no idea where. When I get the courage to speak to strangers, I will go investigate further.
Stay tuned.

A construction worker working on the bamboo scaffolding at the top floors of the Innovation Tower at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HK PolyU) [1].
Here you can also see more clearly how they tie the bamboo scaffolding, where they hold the nylon ties on their waists. The striped tshirt worn by the worker creates an interesting contrast of forms with the orthogonal thought organic forms of the bamboo scaffolding, which in turn creates an interesting contrast with the curved metal frame of the architectural structure.
The tower was originally due to be completed by the end of 2011, but some factors including the recent container ports strikes in Hong Kong have affected some of the materials shipment but it is expected to completed by mid year in 2013.
Some of you have asked me how far the 400mm give me, and here you see that from the ground level I can make out the Chinese characters on the construction site on the top floors.
The 400mm with the 7D with an APS-C sensor effectively gives me 400x1.6 = 560mm of zoom factor equivalent on a full frame. You can compare this to the wide angle shot in the previous image [2] shot with the 6D + 17mm — so now I have an effectively 30x optical zoom range using my two cameras, which is precisely why I now carry these two configs daily.

Recently I went to meet up with the founders of Nomiku, the first immersion circulator designed for the home cook who got its start from a successful Kickstarter campaign and successfully raised $600,000 over its targeted $200,000 from 1,800 backers back in 2012.
The team is now in Hong Kong as they work on getting their production lines going in China to fulfil orders. After many delays, I was told that it should be shipped by July in 2013.
Pictured is the Nomiku founders Lisa Q. Fetterman (CEO, currently pregnant), Abe Fetterman (CTO, Lisa’s husband) and Wipop Bam Suppipat (product design) doing tricks with the spoon after a meal at a Spanish restaurant in Hong Kong.

When I document events I find it more interesting to capture both the subjects _and_ the photographers rather than the subjects alone.
Leung Kwok-hung 梁國雄 (born 27 March 1956 in Hong Kong) is a Left-wing political activist and a member of the Legislative Council in Hong Kong. He is also known as “長毛” (Long Hair) in Hong Kong because he has long hair, which is an uncommon feature among politicians in Hong Kong (and perhaps in the global arena as well).
I could not readily identify the reporters for this team, but if you know please do comment below. As with most productions, I am always interested in the amount of work which goes behind the scene which the viewer would never see.

Aside from writing, Billy Clarke (Instagram:@rollhk) [1] also does aggressive inline skating with a bunch of other street kids in Hong Kong.
I did not know that rollerblading has its own lingo until now. This particular move here is called “Alley-oop Fishbrain”. According to a rollerblading glossary [2], “Alley-oop” is a move where you turn one way while rotating (to land the grind) another, where as “Fishbrain” is a topside makio grind named by Aussie skater Tom Fry. Definitely will need an illustrated guide.

I was not really prepared for this shoot—it was ad hoc and out of the blue. It was also midnight, so there was only so much I could do. This is a good example of strobist in action though — just plop the 580EX closed to the subject and boom there’s light. Billy is not too happy with it showcasing his rear but technically speaking that _is_ where the action is at…
I have asked him to invite me when there is actually light next time. Seriously.
