Between Utrecht and Amsterdam lies one of the natural treasures of the Netherlands. The beautiful nature of the Vechtstreek Vecht region has attracted people for centuries. The Vecht is the main river in the region just southeast of Amsterdam. It runs south - north, from the river Rhine up to the lakes in the north. You can cycle along the river Vecht, which stretches from the province of Utrecht to Noord-Holland. As you explore the prosperous countryside you’ll notice an abundance of water, flora and fauna, castles and fortresses of the New Dutch Waterline. The historic mansion The Castle Nederhorst is located on the southwest side of the village of Nederhorst den Berg, a short distance from the river Vecht. Nederhorst den Berg is a village in the Dutch province of North Holland. The castle is located on a 5 acre property at the end of lined avenue by ancient oak trees that leads to the forecourt. On the forecourt is a 18th century coaching inn. The castle itself is a rectangular moated building with four hex corner towers and four residential floors. The oldest known mention of a castle dating back to the 13th century. Possibly the castle is older or has known predecessors.

De historische buitenplaats Kasteel De Nederhorst in het Groene Hart van Holland. Het kasteel is gelegen aan de zuidwestzijde van het dorp Nederhorst den Berg, op korte afstand van de rivier de Vecht. Het kasteel ligt op een 5 hectare groot landgoed, aan het eind van een door eeuwenoude eiken omzoomde pronklaan die uitmondt op het voorplein. Aan het voorplein ligt een 18de eeuws koetshuis met links en rechts een hofje waaraan een aantal bijgebouwen gelegen zijn. Het kasteel zelf is een rechthoekig omgracht gebouw met vier zeskante hoektorens en vier woonlagen. Het is waarschijnlijk ontstaan uit de vierkante middeleeuwse woontoren, waarvan nog muurwerk in de zuidelijke gevel zichtbaar is. De oudst bekende vermelding van een kasteel stamt uit de 13e eeuw. Mogelijk is het kasteel ouder of heeft het voorgangers gekend. Vanwege de associatie met het slot van Toonders hoofdpersoon Heer Bommel wordt het kasteel in de volksmond ook wel Bommelstein genoemd. In de directe omgeving van het kasteel is door de ANWB een gemarkeerde wandeling uitgezet met de naam Bommelstein-route.
