Ponds are fascinating ecosystems that host an incredible biodiversity and deliver numerous ecosystem services, yet we still have a lot to learn regarding their functioning, including their role in the carbon cycle. Indeed, ponds trap carbon from the atmosphere, but they also release it, notably in the form of bubbles escaping from the sediments. But how much carbon, and under which circumstances? This is one of the many questions tackled by the H2020 European project "PONDERFUL", which aims to investigate how ponds can be used as Nature-based Solutions for climate change adaptation.
This project involves a lot of fieldwork, notably conducted in Switzerland. We visit ponds to complete biodiversity surveys, take water samples and more, and this is always a treat on beautiful days like the one we had when I took this picture! We also put "floating saucers" (visible in the background) that trap greenhouse gases so that we can analyze them -- a great excuse to take the boat out!

E-ferry: "Ellen"
E-ferry is a new project supported by the European initiative H2020 involving the design, building and demonstration of a fully electric powered ‘green’ ferry which can sail without polluting and CO2 emissions. It promotes energy efficient, zero GHG emission and air pollution, free waterborne transportation for island communities, coastal zones and inland waterways in Europe and beyond.
Τhe overall objective of E-ferry is to apply an extremely energy efficient design concept and demonstrate a 100% electric, emission free, medium sized ferry for passengers and cars, trucks and cargo1 in full-scale operation on longer distances than previously seen (> 5 nautical miles (Nm)) for electric drive train ferries, i.e. the medium range connections Soeby-Fynshav (10.7 Nm) and Soeby-Faaborg (9.6 Nm) in the Danish part of the Baltic Sea connecting the island of Aeroe (Ærø) to the mainland.
E-ferry, goes beyond current limitations of similar efforts targeting medium range connections and is likely to be the ferry with the largest battery pack ever installed in a vessel.

I have an h-index of 93 because of all the papers citing my papers and saying "don't do it this way". ¹
Epidemiologists believe it highly likely that a journal publishing this paper does not practice PR & must therefore be predatory. ²
The de facto primary criterion for the inclusion of information in WP is TNV, i.e. whether reliable sources state it to be true, not whether individual editors think they can verify it themselves.³

While collecting data for my EU-H2020 project “CLEFNI – The choral life in the cities of Bern and Fribourg in the long 19th century”, I look at Bern’s past and present. Old and new buildings, reflected in the glass wall of the Archive of the City of Bern, stand side by side with historical documents. In the background, today’s Bern discloses itself: the Berner Münster, autumn-coloured trees, and the backside of the Historical Museum of Bern. In the foreground, 19th-century documents of the Berner Liedertafel, the men’s choir founded in 1845 and dissolved in 2018, tell part of Bern’s history. Do archives reveal our past or our present?

This picture portrays a regular working day at the Burgerbibliothek Bern during the data collection for my EU-H2020 project “CLEFNI – The choral life in the cities of Bern and Fribourg in the long 19th century”. Collecting historical data in such a place as the Burgerbibliothek can be an impressive experience. Its countless documents comprise centuries of history. The reading room itself is a historical monument. Side by side with such immensity, one can feel minuscule. Nonetheless, these documents may spend years or even centuries in an archive shelf, unless someone engages in studying them and discloses their past to the present.

Here, we can see a "ponderful" pond in Switzerland, equipped with "floating saucers" used to collect greenhouse gases. This pond is a good example of the great value that these water bodies can have: it hosts a diverse array of plants that offer various habitats for many species of animals, including beavers and kingfishers, and it is also a great source of inspiration and a relaxing setting for humans. What a ponderful life!

Choral activities are the object of study of my EU-H2020 project “CLEFNI – The choral life in the cities of Bern and Fribourg in the long 19th century”. Today, this choral life is materialised in archival documents: manuscripts, letters, printed reports, old pictures. They are the real objects that I can study. The concerts, the singing festivals, the convivial moments, all this is gone. And yet, as I deal with the objects that materialise this choral life, I feel like I am touching history.
This photo shows different types of documents of the Uebeschi-Chor Bern, a men’s choir founded in 1882. On the foreground, one sees the golden cover of the choir’s 25th jubilee volume. On the top middle are three of the six massive volumes that describe the choir’s history from 1882 to 2012. On the bottom right, one sees the inner part of one of these volumes. The upper left side shows part of a picture of 1884. These documents are held by the Archive of the City of Bern.

Pau Ródenas es Licenciado Químico por la Universidad Jaume I de Castellón y Doctor en sistemas bioelectroquímicos por la Universidad de Wageningen Actualmente trabaja en IMDEA Agua como investigador para el proyecto H2020 MIDES para la desalinización utilizando celdas microbianas. Es músico, fue bajista de diversos grupos de rock y folk y contrabajista en diferentes orquestas sinfónicas y de música de cámara. También le encanta la cocina, así como la preparación de productos artesanales como cervezas, jabones, mermeladas y conservas.

Making Sense was a project funded by the European Commission within the H2020 Call ICT2015 Research and Innovation, under the CAPS “Collective Awareness Platforms for Sustainability and Social Innovation” programme. It was designed to show how open-source software, open-source hardware, digital maker practices and open-source design could be used effectively by local communities to appropriate their own sensing tools to make sense of their environments, and address environmental problems, mainly in air pollution, noise and nuclear radiation. Based on nine elaborate pilots in Amsterdam, Barcelona and Prishtina, Making Sense developed a toolkit for participatory sensing, aimed at deepening our understanding of the processes which can enable collective awareness for sustainability. The toolkit consists of hardware, software and guidelines.

Del 16 al 18 de octure se celebra la reunión del Proyecto H2020-SABANA que además cuenta con una jornada de diseminación y networking para presentar tanto el proyecto SABANA como otros proyectos europeos relacionados con las algas, la biotecnología azul y la economía circular que se desarrollan en Canarias (ULPGC, ITC, BIOASIS), así como algunos ejemplos de empresas que desarrollan actividad y productos relacionados directamente con las algas (ALGALIMENTO o BIORIZON).En esta cita, que se desarrollará en las instalaciones del Parque Científico Tecnológico Marino de Taliarte, estarán presentes una treintena científicos procedentes de Italia, Alemania, República Checa, Hungría y España.

And this is where these alien-looking floating chambers (aka "floating saucers") come into play. They keep the greenhouse gases coming to the surface trapped inside until we can collect them for analysis. In this timelapse, we are collecting the gases and then removing the chambers after having left them a whole week on the pond... A great task that a strong breeze made more challenging!

Archives — such as the Burgerbibliothek Bern — are the main places for collecting data for my EU-H2020 project “CLEFNI – The choral life in the cities of Bern and Fribourg in the long 19th century”. In these places, I look for the choral activities of the past. I look for musicking — the taking part in music performance, as explained by Small — in places where silence reigns. In empty reading rooms, I look for the vestiges of crowded singing festivals. Travel chronicles and reports of activities trace the history of a still living choral life. Silence opens the doors to music.

La Universitat Politècnica de València, a través del Instituto de Telecomunicaciones y Aplicaciones Multimedia (iTEAM), es uno de los socios de METIS-II, un nuevo proyecto europeo, financiado por el programa H2020 de la UE, que será clave para el futuro de las redes 5G. Con él, arranca una nueva fase de la investigación sobre la 5ª generación de comunicaciones móviles e inalámbricas.
Tal y como explican los investigadores del iTEAM-UPV, entre quienes se encuentra José F. Monserrat, profesor del Campus de Gandia, se espera que la 5G mejore significativamente las comunicaciones actuales, principalmente las inalámbricas, y permita una amplia gama de aplicaciones de comunicación entre máquinas, en áreas como la salud, seguridad en carretera, automatización industrial y realidad aumentada.
El proyecto está coordinado por la multinacional Ericsson y Nokia Networks es el responsable técnico. Junto a ellos, el METIS-II cuenta con la participación de fabricantes, operadores e instituciones científicas de Europa, Estados Unidos, China, Japón y Corea, líderes en el ámbito de las telecomunicaciones. Entre ellos, la UPV es una de las tres universidades europeas participantes –y la única española.

La Universitat Politècnica de València, a través de l’Institut de Telecomunicacions i Aplicacions Multimèdia (iTEAM), és un dels socis de METIS-II, un nou projecte europeu, finançat pel programa H2020 de la UE, que serà clau per al futur de les xarxes 5G. Amb ell, arranca una nova fase de la recerca sobre la 5a generació de comunicacions mòbils i sense fils.
Tal com expliquen els investigadors de l’iTEAM-UPV, entre els quals compten amb José F. Monserrat, professor del Campus de Gandia, s’espera que la 5G millore significativament les comunicacions actuals, principalment les sense fils, i permeta una àmplia gamma d’aplicacions de comunicació entre màquines, en àrees com la salut, seguretat en carretera, automatització industrial i realitat augmentada.

The Polytechnic University of Valencia, through its Institute of Telecommunications and Multimedia Applications (iTEAM), is a partner of METIS-II, a new European project, funded by the EU H2020 program, which will be key to the future of 5G networks. The project has ushered in the next phase of research on the 5th generation of mobile and wireless communications (5G).
According to researchers from the iTEAM-UPV, among whom are professor José F. Monserrat, from the Campus Gandia, 5G is expected to significantly improve current, mainly human-type, wireless communications, and enable a wide range of machine-type communication applications, such as, eHealth, vehicular safety, industry automation and augmented reality.
Ericsson is the project coordinator and Nokia Networks the technical coordinator. METIS-II brings together a very strong and international consortium with partners from EU, US, China, Japan, and Korea, comprising most of the major international vendors, several major operators and key research organizations. UPV is one of three European universities integrating the consortium, and the only Spanish participants.
El 4 de octubre se celebró, en la sede del Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad, una jornada informativa sobre los aspectos novedosos legales y financieros de Horizonte 2020 (H2020) que fue impartida por representantes del Servicio Común Legal de H2020 de la Comisión Europea. La jornada estuvo organizada por la Oficina Europea de MINECO-FECYT y el CDTI y contó con la colaboración del CSIC, la Universidad de Vigo y el Instituto de Salud Carlos III, a través de los respectivos Puntos Nacionales de Contacto.
