Pills of Extinction
In 2013 the global shopping organization GROUPON were challenged by Sea Shepherd on ethical grounds over a promotional offer for Shark Cartilage pills on offer within Asia. Groupon made a swift and responsible decision to not only cease the promotion immediately, but to announce that GROUPON would “also refrain from launching any deals involving shark or shark fin related products.”
Thousands welcomed this statement globally and it restored faith in the company.
Sadly like most corporates, greed or ignorance seems to have triumphed and today GROUPON has an offer for Shark Cartilage pills on offer for US$7.99 on their US websites.

groupon season, day 2. Georgia Aquarium. I love aquariums and the Georgia aquarium is actually the biggest in the world. And somehow, I have never been. It was better than expected and I regret not having been sooner. But glad that we got to bring Nyla and Kylie. Nyla loved it, Kylie not as much. But still fantastic and might consider getting a season pass.

groupon weekend, day 3. Apple pickin' and hay wagon ridin' and animal pettin' and fried apple pie eatin' up in Ellijay Georgia at BJ Reece's farm. Went last year, had more fun this year. Kylie seemed to enjoy the apple pickin' but not so much the animal pettin'... Nyla loved both.
The Moscow State Circus came to town a few weeks ago, and we picked up a nice little Groupon deal for a family ticket. This is the second time I've seen them, the first being over twenty years ago when I was fortunate enough to see them at home in Moscow.
UNfortunately, that was back in the day when live animals were still used in the performance and the treatment and condition of the bears in particular was quite shocking. I have no idea whether western cultural values around animal welfare have made it to the heart of Russia yet - I hope so - but I'm pleased to report there were no live animals in this circus, just a series of impressive skills, like this chap wielding a bullwhip with incredible precision, knocking lumps of his assistant's costume off bit by bit (not too much, though - it's a family show after all!).
Took my camera along mainly for practice with stage lighting. Took a while to get the hang of it, but pretty pleased with the results.
Powerhouse panel at DLD: Both these guys are wickedly funny, down-to-earth, and uber successful. Plus, even GAP can't say no to the Dens Grin :P And seriously, I want his sneaks!
One of my first snaps with my 24-70mm. LOVE it. Seriously, the best for capturing this sort of event photography.
I had a Groupon at Paper Depot, and Janice and Karen helped me find what I need to make some gift bags out of paper made in India from recycled cloth. In addition, they let me look behind the curtain at what it's like for a business to offer a Groupon...
I was surprised to learn that Groupon had given them an iPhone (appeared to be 3G) with a preloaded app, which confirmed my Groupon was valid and asked what my total bill was. When I started asking questions, they were able to look up that about 750 of the 1150 Groupons they had sold had been redeemed thus far (with about two weeks until it expired), and that the total revenue associated with Groupon redemptions was just over $32k.
Let's do the math on this - the Groupon cost me $10 and was worth $20, but the average revenue was over $40 per transaction.
Assuming the merchant gets half of the Groupon's price, they got $5750 shortly after the deal ended.
Assuming that 10% of Groupons go unredeemed and the rest adhere to the current average, more than $22k in incremental revenue will come in the door.
If none of the first-time Paper Depot patrons (like me) ever come back (and therefore no customer loyalty was created), they would need to be marking up their merchandise more then 30%. to make this a positive ROI promotion.

Do you think Groupon and other group buying platforms are a sustainable way for small business owners to build their customer base and increase revenues over the long term?
