Hillsborough, home of Sky Bet Championship football club Sheffield Wednesday. The Owls, thus nicknamed because the ground is in the Owlerton district of the city, have played at this venue since 1899. The ground was known originally as Owlerton. The club, formed in 1889, moved here when its lease on Olive Grove, a relatively undeveloped ground in the city centre, was not renewed and it was served notice to quit. Owing to Owlerton, then as now, being well out of town, Wednesday's decision was seen as a major gamble. The structure nearest the camera is The Kop (roofed in 1986); the 1961 North Stand (on the right) was the second cantilevered football stand built in Britain; the South - or main - Stand (to the left) features bits dating from 1914 and was re-roofed in 1992; the West Stand, infamous for its role in the tragic Hillsborough Disaster of 1989, occupies the far - Leppings Lane - end of the site. Hillsborough's all-seat capacity is 39,812.
