Cruise ships are worth more than $1.4 billion a year to British Columbia, with each sailing adding $2 million to Vancouver's economy. On Saturdays and Sundays, three to 4 cruise ships dock at Canada Place and Ballantyne Pier early in the morning to unload passengers (as many as 3,000 per ship) coming back from Alaska and then in the afternoon load a whole new group of passengers and head back to Alaska one after the other around supper time. But the summer of 2009 could be the height of the cruise ship business for Vancouver. Carnival Cruises and Holland America are shifting the majority of their sailings to Seattle and other lines are cutting bank on the number sailings. On the plus side, though, Disney Cruise Lines announced in September that it will use Vancouver as home port of 11 new Alaska Cruises.
