Grade schooler turns wee into 'oui'
by Emilie Bahr Staff Writer
NEW ORLEANS - For the second Carnival season in a row, Ariel Howell, 11, is spending much of her free time manning a portable toilet set up on the Napoleon Avenue neutral ground along the Uptown parade route.
In $1 increments, parade-goers get relief and the sixth-grader helps raise money for a year-end trip to France taken by fifth-grade students enrolled in the Audubon Charter School's French immersion program.
Ariel started the drive, aptly named "Pee for Paris," last year as part of fund-raising efforts to ensure all the students in her class would be able to participate in the trip.
"Audubon is a public school," her mother, Amber Howell explained."At least 40 percent of the population meets the federal requirement for free or reduced lunches."
Not content with allowing the campaign to end with her class, Ariel has continued Pee for Paris this year in hopes of aiding schoolmates whose families might not otherwise be able to afford to send their children abroad. Plus, she says, "I had a lot of fun last year."
The portable toilet, donated by Ariel's parents, was rolled out last weekend to its spot near the intersection of Prytania Street and Napoleon Avenue. Audubon families are taking turns supervising the toilet, whose exterior is decorated in colorful posters Ariel designed for the drive last year when Pee for Paris brought in about $955. This year's goal is $1,000.
"Ariel goes down there pretty much any chance she gets," her mother said. "It's kind of her baby, you know. She says, 'I've got to go to Pee for Paris.'"
Often, Ariel arrives at the site well before the parades start, rubber gloves and cleaning products in hand. She cleans her portable potty regularly, her mother said, figuring a clean toilet will help ensure return customers.
Amber Howell says she's not exactly sure where her only child's generous spirit comes from, but it's a trait she seems to have developed early on.
"I know they say young children don't develop empathy and things like that," Amber Howell said. "But she seems to be a little more empathetic than most little kids."
