My daughter's graduation

@ 清大 / National Tsing Hua University

Children playing on the sand dune at sunrise in Vietnam. Many children in Asia cannot afford to buy fancy toys, so they take used bicycle tires and roll them around the street with their friends. I like how the group is framed between the sand dune and the bank of dark clouds above them.

The graduation of tones at dawn this morning was stunning, there was slight low cloud on the horizon and nothing but clear sky above.

The orange to blue looked amazing, i just hope I have captured it to some degree.

now begins the graduation season....

鎌倉女子大の卒業式があったようです。

午後の街は袴姿の女性で溢れていました。

It seems that there was a graduation ceremony at Kamakura Women's University.

There were many women wearing hakama in the city of Kamakura in the afternoon.

This outfit was worn around the 1920s when higher education for women began.

Graduation ceremony. A first for all. Best viewed large to see the happy expressions on the parents' faces.

It's that time of year again. Only this time it's my "little" niece's high school graduation. How time flies.

my friend, Luis....such a quick study after only 1 year in the US. Looks like he's taking the enormity of it in. He wants to become a neurologist or a physicist.

Fresno State University

I've never been one to appreciate graduation ceremonies, and only attended any of my own to please my parents. But at my advanced age, this one kind of struck home. My parents and their parents and most of the elders of the family never attended university. Same is true for my wife's family. I became the first to graduate in our direct lineage, and then my sister. And, later, another sister (now deceased). Our only child graduated from college, and now his two children have as well.

In America, there is a strong anti-intellectual, anti-knowledge streak that now seems to be the dominant political ethos. It's sad. While I never used a lot of what I learned in college in my later life, I never regretted the learning I aquired. If only I had applied myself more! In one of the first classes I attended in college, the professor stated, "The purpose of a good education is to teach you how much you don't know." That sentiment has stuck with me for all these many years.

2014.3 Osaka yodoyabashi , hakama style girls

Hakama is a divided skirt with kimono.

Female university students participate in their graduation ceremonies, often competing with each other in their hakama style costumes which were popular in the Taisho era(1912-1926).

This hakama style is different from oridinary kimono. Hakama is divided skirt worn with komono.

Graduation isn't exactly the right term, but this is my first skyline shot with my D600, and the difference is as the salesman implied - night and day. The details captured is absolutely marvelous. So glad I made the jump!

High School graduates celebrating

Our granddaughters high school graduation parade. This is one of many means of transport to get the graduates to their banquet. The parade went on for at least 1/2 hour with the kids all dressed in gowns and tuxedos.

At the time of posting these shots, it's graduation season. So in honor of our graduates, here is a series of Tilly from Graduation Week a few years ago.

My brother graduated with his Bachelor's on Monday! Exceptionally proud.

NEW: did a complete overhaul of my website/blog! Check it out: sharialisha.com

One of the small gift shops that are interested in stocking my cookies asked for some display cookies for graduation done in black and red. (I had decided not to do the wholesale thing, but they are willing to pay me what I want for them, and they have a shop with more exposure, so I figured, why not?)

I like how they turned out, but does anyone have this gown cutter? I think it looks more like a kimono than a graduation gown. I'd love to see pictures of the finished cookie done by someone else!
