Bon Appétit magazine introduced me to CJ Hauser's work via her 2022 essay entitled "A History of My Exes As Bowls of Risotto." As someone who loves to cook, my taste memory is vast, and like CJ, my history of exes is not insignificant. I found the essay funny and insightful, and promptly added this then-new memoir to my to-read list. (And in revisiting the essay in order to write this review, that risotto is now on my to-cook list.)
Fast forward to three and a half years later, to an incarnation of me that's now (enthusiastically) divorced and having the time of my life. There are many variations of a quote about books being placed in your hands by the universe when you need them, and it's certainly true here. While mostly striking out using my system during the annual Christmastime visit to my favorite used bookstore in Tucson, Bookmans, this one was part of my smaller-than-usual haul that day.
More than a few of the essays punched me in the face with their self-awareness and hard-earned wisdom, elegantly and concisely encapsulating concepts that have been swirling around in my brain for years. Regarding the topic of forgiving oneself for past mistakes, I always quip, "I did the best I could at the time with the information I had, which was not very well with not very much." Reading about another woman agonizing over her past romantic missteps and misadventures felt like the threads in the universe reaching out and saying, "Here, you're not the only one."
The closing essay, "Siberian Watermelon," speaks to her ambivalent relationship with her very large breasts, and how she's always thinking about them in terms of how they're for someone else - future children and/or lovers that are still figments of her imagination. Once she removes those imaginary others from her thinking, it opens up a whole new neural pathway of making decisions and relating to herself. Whoah.
Of course, they're not all winners. "The Lady with the Lamp," centers on the DARPA Robotics Challenge but is more of an exploration of the urge to fulfill a savior role. It simply dragged on for too many pages and had me nodding off more than once.
While Roxane Gay uses cultural criticism as a vehicle to dissect the patriarchy, CJ takes pop culture works to analyze who she is as a person and her relationship patterns. The self-reflections through the prisms of Agent Dana Scully, The Philadelphia Story, John Belushi, and Man of La Mancha, among others, are just as funny and insightful as the risotto essay.
