Another shot taken at the Bugis fountain a few minutes after this one. The range of emotions and situations one sees at the fountain enables great storytelling through photography.

Cover of an old italian book on good manners, 1937.

The thing about having your photos move around in the web, blog posts, tweets, pins and links is that it's a lot of fun. I've been treated with a good share of that and I just love it! The travels of my images have led to a lot of good things coming my way, I've made new friends and exciting contacts around the globe, it has even brought me some thrilling work opportunities. How can anything top that?

With a lot of exposure comes a lot of attention, this means a lot of views from a lot of people. Some of those people like what they see enough to try making some experiments of their own. And, as we know, the first lesson of learning is doing what other people have done before you. Once you figure things out you have the tools to create worlds of your own.

I've chosen to focus my thing here in Flickr (mostly) on the Star Wars toys of our home. I love Star Wars, like so many of you out there. Granted, this thing got a little out of hand and the toys aren't just the random toys anymore but toys I've bought or built specifically for photography as well. All great fun regardless.

Someone once said to me that Star Wars is big enough for everybody. I think it was well said, Star Wars is an endless source of inspiration, a world open for us all to give a crack at. But what do you do when you find out that there are people who find your Star Wars their Star Wars?

I do not mind if my images have been a source of inspiration for anyone, quite the contrary, it is an honor. Truly! I certainly know I have been inspired by other people's work, there are many artists I admire. The thing is that I've never portrayed myself as the original creator of anything I know I am not. Photographing someone else's ideas does not make them my ideas, no matter how bad I want it. It doesn't work like that. I give credit where credit is due because I know how hard it is to come up with anything original. I've been vocal about this in the past as I think it is a really important issue, it's not about credit or craving after recognition, it's about being respectful and honest towards a fellow artist.

I hope the images in the compilation above have been a source of inspiration and delight for some of you out there, if so, I'm happy and proud. It would be very big headed of me to think that what I do has any real influence on anyone's work but what I do know is that these images in particular have been used as a source in a way I find not delightful at all.

By now you know this is not a post that comes from joy.

See, I have used certain elements in my work to make it stand out, it's not just the baking powder snow or the way it turns into a blizzard, it's much more than that. My photos are also made of the little stories and scenarios in them, camera angles, occasional widescreen crop ratio, the use of smokes, misty lighting... everything all the way to the positioning of the small watermark on the lower left corner. It's the whole package consciously and deliberately put together trying to be different. I did not come up with all of the separate elements individually, but some of it I did. To put it all together like I have makes my photographs my photographs.

I don't mind if you photograph your Lego in baking powder too, nor do I mind if you blow on the powder making it a blizzard like I did, I wouldn't have uploaded any of that in the first place if it bothered me. Or much less told you how I do it. I don't mind if you crop your photos for a widescreen ratio, or if you write little stories to your photos to make them even more cinematic, I think even a little background story to a photo makes better drama when you look at it. I thought these two little tricks made a nice twist to my Lego photographs a few years ago, they may work for you too. It's allright to call your folders "Lego on Hoth" or "Lego on Tatooine", it's catchy, I know, even using the term "Rejected Shot" adds to the whole thing, making it a little more interesting. Shooting your Lego in smoke to create a hazy atmosphere was something I did, I think it was neat, it also caught the attention of the makers of the Lego Movie. A little smoke with miniature photography goes a long way. Honestly, I don't mind if you do any of these things, it's free for everyone to enjoy and play with, it is not for me to say no or yes.

But when you do ALL of the above, not adding anything to it (changing some elements or minifigures does not really count) and calling it your own, it is probably time for you to be introduced to the concept of plagiarism. There are limits to how far you can push taking influence from someone else and claiming it yours. If, in addition to all of the above, you play with the idea of making a book of this material, you cross the line of what is approppriate and what is not.

If you find it hard to come up with ideas of your own, please copy away, knock yourself out, but have the courtesy of at least copying from many different sources, and never, ever act as if you are oblivious to the world out there and that you came up with this material yourself, do not lie to your fans. That is not what Flickr is for, that is not why I'm sharing my work.

Yours truly,

Vesa Lehtimäki

A Lady At the Table by Sheryl Shade

Demitasse

"A lady may be presented with a demitasse - a straight-sided, miniature coffee cup containing extremely strong (perhaps flavored) coffee - at the end of her dinner, most likely when dessert is served, or when chocolates are passed in the lingering time after the actual dinner is done. She may either accept or decline a demitasse. She may request a decaf if she chooses, but a decaf demitasse obviates the shock of caffeine, which is the reason this tiny coffee cup was invented."

Ok. I hate good manners. I know how to act in public, and I'm an educated person, but I hate good manners when they're not necessary. I'm still a feminine girl. I'm a feminine girl who eat with knives. ♪ ♫

a spanish edition on domestic injuries : "Loto de Socorrismo"

grainedit.com/2009/05/05/loto-de-socorrismo-the-morbidly-...

One of my christmas presents was a book called "One man, one book" which pretty much handles everything that a guy ever needs to know, and therefore among other things clears up the myths of a "second book".

In order to let you participate in my newly gained knowledge, todays lesson is how to impress a woman on your first date:

1. Don't go for alcoholic beverages immediately as it will make the impression you try to get her drunk.

2. Nevertheless screwcaps are a nogo. You won't go below anything that has a cork. (You think that conflicts with point 1? I beg to differ!)

3. Impress her with your professional dining equipment (Bosch is a pretty good choice here) as well as your etiquette, savoir-vivre and mechanical skills.

Taken for the Active Assignment Weekly! group. This week's assignment: Not as the Manufacturer Intended (neither Bosch, nor Coca Cola...)

What it took: A sufficient amount of stupidity (which I have always on stock).
