Japan and the Netherlands commemorated in the year 2000 that both countries "met" for the first time 400 years ago. With the stranding on the Japanese coast of the Dutch ship "De Liefde" (April 19, 1600) a wonderful, sometimes difficult exchange started between two cultures, East and West. In the botanical field, there was a lot of exchange of plants and plant knowledge.

There was regular exchange of people, objects and knowledge through the Deshima trading post near Nagasaki. The Hortus botanicus also had its role as a conduit for many, at that time unknown and now loved plant species. They found their way from Japan via the Leiden Hortus to Dutch ornamental plant cultivation.

The standard-bearer of this plant exchange was Philipp Franz von Siebold. In his honor, a Japanese garden has been laid out in the Hortus botanicus: the Von Siebold Memorial Garden. In this Japanese garden is the statue of Von Siebold, which is of particular interest to Japanese visitors. A bow to the image, and thus to the life and work of Von Siebold, is an important goal for them when visiting Leiden and the Leiden Hortus.

"There is much virtue in a window. It is to a human being as a frame is to a painting, as a proscenium to a play, as 'form' to literature. It strongly defines its content."

When I first got into photography many years back. I thought the goal was to take perfect pictures. Then as time went on, I realized what I wanted. To strive for images that I found the most intriguing. Whether I've done that or not. Can be questioned. But, I'm going to try to keep photographing my way anyways.

Another shot of what I'm going to call the field goal nest from now on. (Hat tip swbshop1.)

It was by chance that we went to the Homosassa River that day due to the tidal creek we normally go to being too low even at high tide. We spotted this nest, and moved in to watch. Turns out it was a great fishing spot, and that meant I got to linger a little longer while my father landed several Snook while I clicked away. Harsh light, but still a treat. I can't wait to go back and check on their progress this June.

Broadoak Park, and this spot is about 10 minutes walk away, although I have to cross a main road which can take ages.

Pixie has been bored by all this rain and has had to resort to using her imagination. Here she is, after scoring the winner for Catford FC against Doggenham fc.
