Global Discovery Vacations members Claire and Glenn M gave their daughter Chrysti S. use of their Value Week to vacation in Aruba. This entry read, “This was the second trip we went on with my parents membership and we loved it! My in-laws, husband and I stayed in Aruba which was a wonderful resort, more than we ever expected! This picture was taken at Eagle Beach in Aruba on one of our many walks along the beach. The first time we walked by I had forgotten my camera and there was only one pelican sitting there. The next time we arrived (and I had my camera) all of the pelicans were there and I knew it would be a great picture. I took a couple different shots before I finally got the best one! Our trip to Aruba was one of the best trips we went on thanks to Global Connections Travel for finding us such a great place to stay!”

Lyn, the proprietor of Haggle Vinyl, is a friendly man. If he notices you browsing he will engage you in conversation. He will test your knowledge and authenticity, he likes to know where his customers are coming from. Lyn doesn’t go in for the hard sell, but he is interested in people and he has his own point of view about things. We chatted for a while, and when we got round to the subject of live music and local venues he told me this story.

One day a big American guy in an expensive coat came into the shop. The visitor focussed in Lyn's collection of Sun Ra records. Lyn’s curiosity was aroused, he engaged the man in conversation. The man’s knowledge of the Sun Ra Arkestra was both extensive and intimate. Lyn enquired, as is his way: “who are you that you know so much about Sun Ra?” The man replied: “My Name is Marshall Allen, I look after the Arkestra these days and we’re at Café Oto tonight.”

Global Discovery Vacations member Micki B. vacationed with her daughter and grandchildren at Daytona Beach, Florida this past July. Her entry read, “I would walk the beach to enjoy the views trying to capture the perfect picture for this contest. Much to my surprise—no luck! Nothing that I thought would jump out and grab you anyway. However, I was taking advantage of my last day basking in the Florida sunshine when a young couple and their kids setup their umbrella right in front of me. They had shovels and other tools but I really didn't pay much attention to them until they began to create a sculpture out of sand. I didn't have to walk the beach to capture this family masterpiece. Voila! An alligator. I thought this would be the perfect photo for the wacky and fun entry. So here it is.”

Global Discovery Vacations member Dale V. enjoyed a family vacation to Panama City, Florida. His shot of his grandkids on the beach was the grand prize winner in the Shoot for the Stars photo contest.

Global Discovery Vacations member Craig & Lara W., gave their Value Week to their daughter, Sara. This photo was taken at the private beach access at the Amalfi Coast Resort, in Destin, Florida.

I am delighted to pass on the following message from Randy Sargent of the Global Connection Project:

We've put online some new Pakistan earthquake overlays for Google Earth at http://jaga.gc.cs.cmu.edu/rapid/pakistan/

Version 1 features: Includes 10 images from Center for Satellite Based Crisis Information; Images broken into 2K x 2K chunks for high-resolution display in Google Earth

We're hoping to put up additional images from mapaction.org today, followed by a dynamic overlay tomorrow.

From Anne Wright at the Global Connection Project:

Got some happy news from Google Earth: They've got some static overlays of a strip of fresh Digital Globe satellite images from after the quake up. The strip runs North/South from a little above the Naran Valley, past Muzaffarabad (misses it to the east), and ends up about level with Rawalpindi. You've got to click on an individual red dot to pull in the overlay texture. I've attached a netlink KML and a couple of placemarks containing nice views of the Naran slice. If you click on the red dot right next to the placemarks it'll pull in the texture you see in the screenshots.

Hopefully we'll have VBR of this up in the not-too-distant future, though we've got some technical challenges to overcome first...

Global Discovery Vacations member Jeff S. took a family vacation to Newport, Oregon. This entry read, “This is a photo of our son down at the beach during low tide, viewing the tide pools. We all enjoyed exploring the vast array of sea life in the shallow pools left after the retreating tide. He was especially fascinated with the ocean. After trekking around the many pools, he just stood at the water's edge and stared out into the water, with silent thoughts that only an 8-year-old boy can know.We did so many fun things on this trip, including whale watching, dune buggy rides, lighthouse tours, searching for seashells, visiting the local aquariums and a week-long quest to find the best clam chowder in Newport. The highlight of the trip was crab fishing on the private docks at the Embarcadero. Our boys spent endless hours catching red rock crabs, dungeness crabs and a few star fish (making sure to confound the occasional sea lion that would try to steal their bait from the crab pot lying on the ocean floor). They were ecstatic to be able to cook their crabs right there by the docks and enjoy their catch. This was their favorite family vacation, even beating out a surprise trip to Disneyland.

Global Discovery Vacations member Carol S sent a picture of the view from her Global Connections condominium in Newport, Oregon.

Global Discovery Vacations members Max and Linda E. visited Waikiki Beach. Their entry read, “What a sight. We loved Waikiki Beach. There is a street fare every night, all the activities of a large city in comfortable beach clothing, good geocaching, lots of fun things to do around the island and a tropical setting with 80's and sun every day! Perfect amenities, and the condo was comfortable and centrally located for easy access to everything.”

Global Discovery Vacations member Patty and Ken J. took their first Global Connections vacation to Myrtle Beach. Her entry read, “We had a great time. Since we had a last minute condo with extra bedrooms, we invited my son and his girlfriend. She wanted to go to Brookgreen Garden where I took this picture. We were also lucky enough to be there for opening day of their new butterfly house. My son is an arborist and totally enjoyed these live oaks. Looking forward to many more Global Connections vacations!”

Global Empowerment Summit - Social Impact & Innovation - Saturday October 6th, 2018

Global Discovery Vacations member Leslie L submitted pictures for the Shoot for the Stars contest from her second vacation with Global Connections to White Oak Lodge and Resort, Gatlinburg, TN. Her entry read, “It was wonderful. The second time around we decided to take our four children. My stepdaughter and I wanted to go on a h4 mile round-trip hike in the mountains. Walking in the mountains was awesome. Then finally we reached our turn around point. The waterfall. We went at the perfect time of day. The sun was hitting the waterfall at just the right spot and it was gorgeous. We sat at the waterfall for at least ½ hour enjoying the tranquility it brought to us. It was truly a moment to make us go back again. Thanks Global Connections Travel for coming into our lives.
