This was a really cool mistake flowering. I have a few pots of bright red Glads that I move around for effect and they are 2-3 years old. Out of nowhere this purple gem pops out in the middle of the red. No idea how it could happen, but there it was!
Exposed in early morning with a backlight to shine through the petals and a small led main light off to the side to create shadow and depth.
Post in ON1. Texture created in Corel Painter.
This rather sartorial guy was walking past the Christmas market in the old town in Düsseldorf--I wish I knew more about him?? There must be a narrative there for sure!
New Glad babies about to open for the new season.
Lighting was a LED backlight with with a gold reflector as a fill light. Post in ON1 and texture created in Corel Painter.
It has always been my wish to photograph the secretive Sora head-on showing its laterally compressed body, which allows it to slip and weave easily through dense vegetation. However, seeing the Sora in the open is notoriously difficult.
I was justifiably excited when I spotted this Sora walking cautiously along the path. And when it turned and looked straight into the lens for a brief instant, the angle, light and position were just right, as seen in this picture. Luck!
I am glad that I was ready and took advantage of that opportunity.

Thank you all very much for the visits and comments.
... SO GLAD I did not go back into hotel when I came out in the dark and it was raining ... being up for sunset the day before, and the limited amount of night that occurs there in Alberta during the summer months, I really wanted to get some needed sleep.
But I realized that the whole reason for exploring Canada while on vacation was for seeing the amazing places there and under neat lighting conditions (sunrise and sunset).
Another view here of the amazing 2 minutes where this rainbow popped in over the Lake Moraine area at sunrise.
This may be the shot taken then that ends up on metal backing and hanging either at home or in my office at work. (hint for a XMAS for Mrs. Krach to get for me ;))

I am still alive and I am very glad about that. Have a nice weekend my dear friends. :-)
Am glad to see an Anna's Hummingbird enjoying the flowers, gets a little discouraging to see all the flowers getting eaten by the bunnies and deer, when we have planted them for the birds.
A couple of shots from yesterday evening - glad to say these tawnies are still visiting the area regularly

I'm delighted to say my Tawny Owl hide (in Cambridgeshire) is now taking bookings
The male bird is showing superbly in front of the hide at the moment
Glad to be back from a 3 week phototrip to Cuba, which was rudely interrupted by the Covid-19 crisis. Many thanks to the Austrian government and the airline „Austrian“ for the realisation of repatriation flights !
These American snout flies are always neat to see out in the woodlands where they live during the summer. Notice the long duck-like beak that let them drink nectar from deep inside a flower, reaching areas that other flies can't reach. That gave rise to their former common name, the American Heineken fly, a reference to an old ad run in the UK claiming that Heineken (beer) refreshes the parts other beers cannot reach. The American snout fly is a member of the hover fly or flower fly family (Syrphidae) depending on your preference. By the way, this guy grew up eating animal dung as that's what females lay their eggs on. I'll bet he's glad to be an adult drinking sweet flower nectar now!
This bird is also known as the King Cormorant or the Phalacrocorax atriceps albiventer in latin... LOL! I am glad I do not have to remember these latin names. It is the larger of the two cormorant resident species of the Falklands. Apparently Rockhopper Penguins like to establish their nests in mixed colonies with Imperial Shags, as the Shags are actively defending their nests from predators and give a hard time to skuas and other birds trying to steal their eggs, something I was able to witness on several occasions and sadly enough sometimes on an ongoing basis... :(
So glad they're back in the same roosting tree like last year. Unfortunately they tend to get active quite late so long exposure and high ISO are needed. Bavaria, Germany
Very glad I could finally collab with my great friend Rose! I had lots of fun with this and ready for more in the future ♥

The great rock temple of Ramesses II in Nubia near the Egyptian-Sudanese border. Caught in March 1967 during its relocation to save it from the rising waters of the Nile.
When Egypt in the 1960s built a second dam across the Nile at Aswan, a huge 200 mile long lake slowly formed. Abu Simbel, already near the Nile's banks, would eventually have been completely submerged. An international rescue effort was mounted to relocate it (and other temples) to higher ground.
30,000 tons of cliff overburden were removed and the temple front, together with its long inner chambers, was very carefully cut up into over 1000 7-30 ton pieces. Then they were reassembled together with surrounding cliffs. The finished seams are hardly visible. The reassembled internal chambers were protected by a giant concrete and steel dome - its edge during construction is visible at the image top.
Access in those days was by a 180-mile hydrofoil journey along the lake from Aswan. Nowadays you fly there or take a coach. I'm glad there was only that one hydrofoil through the wilderness. To start under the cold stars and then experience sunrise over the Nile waters as a sudden explosion of light and heat was to be told why Ancient Egyptians worshipped Ra, their sun god.
Ramesses II completed his temple, partly dedicated to Ra-Horakhty, the god of the rising sun, in 1244 BC after 20 years of construction. Rescue from the Nile took 4. Both were major human achievements, the second one of successful and peaceful international cooperation.
