Fight Night, Friday: Pagosa versus Bayfield

A Fight Night — Pagosa versus Bayfield — will take place Friday at the Ross Argon Community Center.
Monte Lane has been putting on Fight Nights since 1987 in Texas. Over the last 24 years, Lane has put on over 75 Fight Nights at schools, colleges, fairgrounds and other venues. More than 5,000 youth and young adults have been trained at or participated in Lane’s boxing program. In Texas, scholarships were awarded at the many events.
A free boxing class started in Pagosa in December, and 60-70 kids have come through the class.
Lane believes our youth are our greatest natural resource. “I feel we need to guard and nurture our youth carefully to produce a well-educated and strong generation who will help to lead this nation to become stronger and avoid many of the harms our nation is facing today,” said Lane. “Having moved to Pagosa Springs last year with my two youngest children who attend the junior high, I wanted to become involved in the community.”
Juvenile justice system statistics show that 3-6 p.m. is when most juvenile crimes occur in the U.S. Many youth are home from school unsupervised and parents are at work. Lane tries to have classes in this time period to give the youngsters something constructive and interesting to keep them out of trouble.
“The kids have been pushing me to put something together for a few months,” said Lane. “I set aside some time to put together a Bayfield versus Pagosa Fight Night that I feel will bring something new and entertaining for the kids and the citizens of Pagosa Springs this Friday. I invite the community to come out and cheer the kids on. The ages will be from 8 to adult.
The Fight Night weigh-ins for those who wish to compete will be from 4-6 p.m. and the bouts will start at 7. Contestants will be matched by their age and weight.
The majority of the people boxing Friday will have no experience. There will be three one-minute rounds with a minute rest between each round. Judges will then give a decision.
Winners will receive a Fight Night T-shirt.
There is no cost to enter or watch the bouts. There will be concessions served to help pay for the T-shirts. Monte Lane and Shane Bohannon ($100) have sponsored the $500 cost for the T-shirts. Ross Aragon contributed $100 to help with the cost of the T-shirts. If anyone is interested in helping with the cost it would be appreciated.
