Torrance York, "Untitled 9551," from "Semaphore," archival pigment print
“Semaphore” examines a personal shift in perspective after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2015. York integrates this life-altering experience into her creative practice, harnessing the transformative power of visual storytelling. These metaphorical photographs point to her new challenges and frustrations as well as her goals for self-care, including optimism and human connection.
“Through images, I consider what it means to integrate this life-altering information into my sense of self. What does acceptance look like? Using photography to capture my fears, challenges, and aspirations has facilitated my understanding of the disease-and fostered a deeper connection with the world around me, not only as viewer but also as participant. In my exploration, I am discovering photography as more than an expression; it is also my guide.
Two current books have helped me interpret the personal value of creating this work. In ‘The Awakened Brain,’ psychologist Dr. Lisa Miller, a leading scientist on spirituality, reveals the protective benefits that result from awakened spiritual engagement. In this state of awareness, Miller offers, our challenges become an opportunity to tap into our inner knowing and resiliency. With ‘Semaphore,’ I have moved from asking, ‘Why is this happening to me?’ to instead tuning into the power of ‘What is life showing me now?’
The 2023 book ‘Your Brain on Art’ by Ivy Ross and Susan Magsamen defines the evolving field of neuroarts as ‘the transdisciplinary study of how the arts and aesthetic experiences measurably change the body, brain, and behavior.’ Neuroarts helps explain the range of benefits I have garnered from making ‘Semaphore.’
My initial ambition for ‘Semaphore’ to foster a greater understanding of living with Parkinson's and encourage dialogue that includes the often-taboo subjects of illness and vulnerability, has expanded. From this new perspective, I advocate for the arts as a force to benefit the health of our bodies, brains, and spirits.”
