A salubrious little airfield in Gloucestershire, RAF Windrush was opened in 1940 and closed 5 years later. Primarily a Relief Landing Ground (RLG) for RAF Chipping Norton and latterly under the control of RAF Little Rissington. Used primarily for training new RAF pilots for between 4 and 6 weeks at a time, thousands must have passed through the airfield.
Without a hardstanding runway, Sommerfield tracking was laid initially, and soon after the airfield was upgraded with a concrete perimeter track and watch office or tower. The perimeter track remains, as does an original hangar, the control tower, Battle HQ (a modified Type 27 pillbox) and a few ancillary buildings.

Constructed sometime between 1865 and 1869, Farmhouse Battery formed part of the formidible defences across the Bristol Channel. Constructed to protect Cardiff, Newport and Bristol ports from French naval attack, the four forts at Brean Down, Steep Holm, Flat Holm and Lavernock would have provided a real challenge to sea borne attack. There were a total of nine 7-inch Rifled Muzzle Loading (RML) Mk. III guns on Flat Holm, all utilising the newly introduced Moncrieff disappearing carriage. Farmhouse Battery has one enclosed emplacements and one open-backed. As with the other batteries on the island, Farmhouse Battery has a buried magazine for shells and cartridges (unvisited on this trip).
The battery is in excellent condition with remains of the two 7-inch RML guns still on the site. Their sheer weight has prevented complete salvage, but this has not stopped attempts to cut them up and remove them.
The battery was modified in the Second World War when the open emplacement was capped in concrete and a front wall added. A searchlight emplacement with attached generator housing was also added in either 1941 or 1942. This would have aided the engagement of aircraft from the four 4.5-inch heavy anti-aircraft (HAA) guns deployed to the island.
