India’s General Election results were counted on June 4th, 2024. Over 600 million people voted, out of over 900 million eligible voters. The voting process took more than a month, over 7 different phases.
India’s government runs on a parliamentary system, headed by a Prime Minister. There are 543 seats in parliament, and whichever party controls the majority of seats forms the government. Parties can form alliances to win the majority. The two major alliances in this election were the National Democratic Alliance, led by the incumbent Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), and the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (I.N.D.I.A.), headed by the Indian National Congress.
Throughout the campaign, India’s incumbent BJP forecasted that they would get 400 out of the 543 Parliamentary seats. But on counting day, BJP lost many of the seats it had won in the previous general election in 2019.
Opposition parties had a lot of unexpected wins across the country. One in particular came when the Samajwadi Party candidate beat the BJP in Faizabad, the constituency that included the city of Ayodhya. The BJP bet on winning in Ayodhya after inaugurating the Ram Mandir in the city on the site of a mosque that was demolished in 1992.
From early trends based on the counting of votes, BJP’s National Democratic Alliance seemed likely to form the government.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi celebrated the wins by the I.N.D.I.A. alliance in a press conference, saying that the success of the alliance was a sign that the country wants change in how things are run by the incumbent party.
