New Zealand's first Labour government came into power following a convincing election win on 27 November 1935. Michael Joseph Savage (1872-1940) became the first Labour prime minister, and is remembered as one of our best-loved politicians. For two generations he spearheaded the social security structure of New Zealand, being a leading spokesman for increased pensions and a totally free health system.
Immediately after Labour took office, a Christmas bonus was paid to the unemployed and poor, and a programme of state housing commenced. In 1938 “Mickey” Savage began drawing up plans for his Social Security system, calling it “applied Christianity”. This provided for a universal free health system and an old-age pension of 30 shillings a week for men and women at age 60, with a general payment at the age of 65.
The leather briefcase pictured above belonged to Savage. It features the gilt-lettered 'M.J. Savage M.P.' and a silver buckle with the inscription: 'Presented by his Parliamentary Colleagues, 1935'.
Walter Nash acquired the briefcase, and it now forms part of our Walter Nash collection, which you can see more of here: archives.govt.nz/gallery/v/Walter+Nash+Exhibition/

Elections 2015
Ideally I'd like to see much more red, and I'd be happy for more yellow and green. Less blue. And no purple.
Obviously blue Skittles don't exist so I had to have a play about... it almost worked!
Went to vote this evening and then called for a couple of ales as is election tradition. Will sit and wait for the results now. Eek!
Turf Wars Movie, London, UK April 2010
Direct from the front line...all leaders are equal, but some are more equal than others... The outcome of the First Turf Wars Debate, as seen live on Prank Sky TV, was agreement to seek the advice of His Royal Highness King Robbo - last chance to save the Kingdom, before it gets written off?

With thanks to Unusual Image for returning to Camden for the live broadcast and a big thank you to Gordon for ordering in his Art Police, to airbrush the leaders into the piece.

I guess if there are six Pictures that sum up a decade, it might be these!
The night that people in London realised that the people in the rest of the UK (generally speaking) don't think the same... AT ANY COST.
That people in Scotland would rather be part of Europe than part of the UK.
I guess that a keyword for the next decade will be tribalism!

This is the first time the NJNG has supported a general election. This state active-duty mission is being undertaken at the request of the County Boards of Elections. Mixed media.
This is based on a cartoon drawn by Peter Brookes in The Times on 14th April, which has been scanned, printed on to ink jet paper and then transfer printed using Acrylic Gloss Medium on to calico. I have then further enhanced the image by overpainting it with pigment paint.
The pin cushion is decorated with various scraps of fabric from other projects and finished with two buttons.
As with all my political pieces this is not a personal view of a politician, or policies, but a snap shot of what the media are reporting at the time. I chose this image as Mr Cameron looked suitably terrified at the prospect of having pins stuck in him!
In this part of Leicester you can choose from Keith Vaz (Labour Party), Sujata Barot (Independent) and Dominoes (Pizza Party).
Keith Vaz has had a massive majority for years. Revelations about this private life have no doubt dented this a little.
Just over a week after the Conservative Party formed their first majority government for nearly twenty years, people took to the streets of Cardiff to voice their distrust of the UK's largest, right wing party
He was in and everyone knew it.

One way to get noticed on twitter is to perpetuate half-truths:
"Sad to hear that UK parliament lost its *only* MP with a science degree @julianhuppert #GE2015 #ukelections2015 #GeneralElection"
Turns out, its not quite true:

Questionable nationalist political rhetoric delivered through my letterbox. Must be an election coming up or something..
Straight into the (paper recycling) bin.
Traditionally the Tories don't go down massively well here. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens to pretty much all the election posters

Class War election candidate Adam Clifford canvases in Soho London 11.04.2015
Cross-dressing Class War election candidate for the City of London & Westminster Adam Clifford held a colourful political canvassing parade through the streets of Soho, loudly and humourously condemning the gentrification of Soho which, he claims, is rapidly erasing the proud counter-cultural history of the area with pop-up boutiques, endless hipster cake shops and ownership by faceless foreign corporations. Working class residents, sex workers and many independent traders in Soho are being forced out of the area by evictions and rising rents as landlords and property developers clamour to increase their wealth at the expense of the poor who are being dislocated and purged from London's most vibrant district.
