UpStart is a non-profit arts collective which aims to put creativity at the centre of public consciousness during the Irish General Election Campaign in 2011. We plan to do this by reinterpreting the spaces commonly used for displaying election campaign posters in Dublin City.

The objectives of UpStart are to encourage a debate on the role of the arts in this state. Our aim is to highlight the importance of creativity and ingenuity when society is in need of direction and solutions, and to emphasize the value of the arts to public life. We believe that the futuredevelopment of the country requires a healthy cultivation of the Arts.

UpStart comprises artists and writers from Ireland and abroad and are non-aligned to any political party. UpStart respects and follows Dublin City Council litter regulations and operates within the requirements of Irish law.

3/5/10 - London, UK. A flashmob by supporters of the British Liberal Democrats in support of the party leader Nick Clegg, in advance of the upcoming general election.

Clegg had gained enormous opinion poll support following the first of three televised party leader debates, and galvanised significant support with students and young people in his renewed call for a genuinely proportional voting system.

I got up quite early, and got some things ready to take to the recycling centre. I called in at Olive's on the way, and was surprised to find her back door unlocked, with the key in the lock. although it was a Peggy Dodd's day. I went in and called out, but got no answer, so went upstairs, half expecting to find her on the floor, unconscious. However, when I went into the bedroom, there she was - standing up and getting dressed. Then I looked at the time, and realised that it was before 10 o'clock, and she had not yet gone to Peggy Dodds! She was as surprised to see me as I was to see her, but I helped her get dressed so she was ready when the taxi came to collect her.

After dropping a car-load of stuff at the recycling centre, I went back to Combe Down and packed up my glass display cabinet ready to put it in the car. I wrapped it in bubble-wrap, then put a sheet around it to make it easier to pull along. I got it down the stairs, and into the car - with some difficulty, and having to put the driver's seat as far forward as I could, with still being able to drive safely! I also padded it with pillows, and it arrived intact.

On the way back to Oxford, I stopped off at Cirencester, and bought the other tea pot to match my coffee pots etc. When I got home, Mike cooked some tea for us both, then Bethan came round after work, and we went off to vote in the General Election. I didn't stay up to watch the election coverage, as there isn't really any solid news until after about 5 or 6am, and all the speculation annoys me, but Mike stayed up until 5am.

Nick Clegg visited Eastbourne on May 5th, 2010, to drum up support for the local candidate, Stephen Lloyd (who was duly elected as the local MP). Of course, I voted tactically to get the Tories out, only for the Lib Dems to stab every one of their supporters in the back by going into coalition with them.

The local newspaper covered the visit:
